Run HP Battery Check first; if the battery passes, calibrate it, but if it reports failure or the laptop still shuts down at 25% after calibration, arrange battery replacement or HP service.
1. Test the battery hardware
- Connect the original or HP-approved AC adapter.
- Open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics Windows and run Component Tests → Power → Battery Check. If Windows cannot start, use HP PC Hardware Diagnostics UEFI instead.
- Record the test result and any failure ID.
HP directs users to test battery health before calibration because an inaccurate percentage can indicate either a battery-gauge problem or a deteriorated battery.^1^ HP also provides Battery Check specifically for battery and charging faults.^2^
Act on the result:
- Passed or Calibrate: Continue to calibration.
- Weak/Very Weak: Calibration might improve the displayed percentage, but reduced runtime is expected.
- Replace/Failure ID: The battery requires service or replacement; save the failure ID for HP Support.
- No battery detected: Have the battery connection and battery hardware inspected.
2. Calibrate it if the test passes
Follow the calibration procedure offered by HP Hardware Diagnostics. Calibration fully charges and discharges the battery so its internal gauge can relearn the usable capacity. HP states that this resets the battery gauge so Windows can display the charge level accurately.^1^
After calibration:
- Charge the laptop fully.
- Restart it.
- Use it on battery power and observe whether the percentage now decreases normally below 25%.
- If it again switches off around 25% and restarts at 0%, treat that as a persistent battery or charging-system fault rather than changing Windows’ low-battery settings. HP’s guidance for a battery that cannot reliably power the laptop is hardware service or replacement.^3^
Stop using the laptop on battery if the case is swelling, the trackpad or keyboard is lifting, or the battery becomes unusually hot.
3. Generate a Windows battery report
This provides capacity history to accompany an HP support request.
- Right-click Start and open Windows PowerShell (Admin) or Command Prompt (Admin).
- Run:
mkdir C:\reports
powercfg.exe /batteryreport /output C:\reports\batterylife.html
start C:\reports\batterylife.html
The report includes the installed battery, recent usage, design capacity, full-charge capacity, capacity history, and estimated battery life.^4^
Compare Design Capacity with Full Charge Capacity:
- A substantially lower full-charge capacity supports battery deterioration.
- A seemingly healthy capacity does not override a failed HP hardware test or repeated abrupt shutdown; provide both the report and HP failure ID when requesting service.
4. Windows-only fallback
If HP Battery Check passes and calibration completes successfully, run the Windows 10 power troubleshooter:
Start → Settings → Update & Security → Troubleshoot → Power → Run the troubleshooter.^5^
Battery Saver can reduce consumption, but it cannot repair an inaccurate battery gauge or a battery that loses voltage abruptly.
