A family of Microsoft products that enable users to capture, organize, and reuse notes electronically.
Open the OneNote desktop app from the Windows Start menu and leave it running before retrying the print job.
Start OneNote
- Select Start or press the Windows key.
- Type OneNote.
- Open OneNote (the desktop app), not merely a OneNote page in your browser.
- If prompted, sign in and open any notebook.
- Leave OneNote open, return to the document you want to print, and select Print again.
- To send the document into OneNote, select OneNote (Desktop) or OneNote (Desktop) – Protected, then choose Print. OneNote should display a window where you select the destination notebook and page.^1^
If you want paper, not OneNote
The message can appear because OneNote (Desktop) is selected as the printer. That is a virtual printer that sends content into a notebook rather than to paper.
- In the application, select File > Print.
- Open the Printer list.
- Select the name of your physical printer—not OneNote (Desktop) or Microsoft Print to PDF.
- Confirm its status is Ready, then print.^2^
If OneNote does not appear or will not open
Repair Microsoft 365:
- Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
- Select its options menu, then Modify.
- Run Quick Repair and test OneNote.
- If it still will not start, run Online Repair.^2^
If OneNote opens but its virtual printer is missing, first ensure your notebooks are fully synchronized, then uninstall and reinstall OneNote. Microsoft documents reinstalling the app as the way to restore an accidentally removed OneNote virtual printer.^1^
