    Hi, @Nancy Newman

To help narrow this down, I have a few questions:

    1. Are you trying to print a document from another application, such as Word or a PDF reader, or directly from OneNote?
    2. What is the exact error message you receive when you try to print?
    3. Have you already tried opening OneNote manually? If so, does it open successfully or display an error?

In the meantime, try opening OneNote manually:

    • Press the Windows key and type OneNote in the search bar.
    • Select OneNote from the search results to open it.
    • Once OneNote is open, return to the document you want to print and try printing again.

If you do not use OneNote, the message may mean that the OneNote printer is selected instead of your actual printer. When printing, check the printer selection and choose your physical printer instead.

    Thanks!

Open the OneNote desktop app from the Windows Start menu and leave it running before retrying the print job.

    Start OneNote

    1. Select Start or press the Windows key.
    2. Type OneNote.
    3. Open OneNote (the desktop app), not merely a OneNote page in your browser.
    4. If prompted, sign in and open any notebook.
    5. Leave OneNote open, return to the document you want to print, and select Print again.
    6. To send the document into OneNote, select OneNote (Desktop) or OneNote (Desktop) – Protected, then choose Print. OneNote should display a window where you select the destination notebook and page.^1^

If you want paper, not OneNote

The message can appear because OneNote (Desktop) is selected as the printer. That is a virtual printer that sends content into a notebook rather than to paper.

    1. In the application, select File > Print.
    2. Open the Printer list.
    3. Select the name of your physical printer—not OneNote (Desktop) or Microsoft Print to PDF.
    4. Confirm its status is Ready, then print.^2^

If OneNote does not appear or will not open

    Repair Microsoft 365:

    1. Open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
    2. Find Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Office.
    3. Select its options menu, then Modify.
    4. Run Quick Repair and test OneNote.
    5. If it still will not start, run Online Repair.^2^

If OneNote opens but its virtual printer is missing, first ensure your notebooks are fully synchronized, then uninstall and reinstall OneNote. Microsoft documents reinstalling the app as the way to restore an accidentally removed OneNote virtual printer.^1^
