Additional sign-in or account-related issues within Microsoft Teams for Education
A personal Microsoft account cannot be converted into a school account; ask the school’s Microsoft 365 administrator to create and license a separate work or school account, then add that account to Teams alongside the personal account.
What to do
- Contact the school’s IT or Microsoft 365 administrator.
- Ask whether you already have a Microsoft Entra school account.
- If not, ask them to create one and assign the required Teams/Microsoft 365 Education license.
- Work or school accounts are created and managed by an organization’s administrator; personal and organizational accounts are separate and do not synchronize. ^1^
- Add the school account to Teams.
- Open Teams.
- Select your profile picture.
- Select Add another account.
- Choose the existing account or select Create or use another account.
- Sign in using the credentials supplied by the school.
- Use the school identity for the job’s sign-in.
- If Microsoft asks “Which account do you want to use?”, select Work or school account, not Personal account.
- If the job invitation was assigned specifically to the personal identity, ask the job administrator to update or resend it to the school account. Access belongs to the identity to which it was granted, even when two identities display the same email address.
Can the email address remain the same?
Possibly, but only if the school controls that email domain and provisions the school account with that address. Two separate Microsoft identities can use the same displayed email address:
- a personal Microsoft account;
- a Microsoft Entra work or school account.
They remain independent accounts with separate passwords, permissions, data, and administration. They cannot be merged. ^3^
If your original address is from a personal provider and the school cannot provision it as its organizational account, you will need to use the school-issued address. In that situation, ask the job administrator to register or invite the school account instead.
A personal account can alternatively be invited into an organization as a guest, but that does not convert it into a school account and might not satisfy a service that explicitly requires an organizational identity. ^1^
