Subject: Microsoft Teams Free sign-in error on OnePlus Ace 2 Pro (Android 16) – Personal Hotmail account

Hello Microsoft Support,

I am experiencing a persistent sign-in issue with Microsoft Teams for personal use on my OnePlus Ace 2 Pro (model PJA110), running Android 16 with the original Chinese ColorOS ROM.

When I try to sign in using my personal Hotmail account, I receive the following error message in Spanish:

“Sign-in error. It looks like you’re not using Teams yet. Check that the organization you’re trying to sign in to has invited you. You can also set up Teams for your organization by selecting Create a new account.”

My account is a personal Microsoft/Hotmail account, not a work or school account.

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Confirmed that my Hotmail account works correctly on the Microsoft website.
  • Confirmed that the same account works in Microsoft Authenticator on this phone.
  • Confirmed that the same account can sign in to Microsoft Teams on another mobile phone.
  • Cleared Teams app data and restarted the phone.
  • Tested both the standard Microsoft Teams app and the Teams beta app. Both produce the same error.
  • Checked that my device is Google Play Protect certified and that Teams is installed from Google Play.
  • Switched Android System WebView from the Dev version to the stable version and force-stopped Teams. The problem persists.
  • Checked the Android locale and system properties using ADB. The device retains Chinese product locale settings (zh-CN), while the user language settings are es-MX,en-US.

The issue appears to be specific to this device or its Android/ColorOS environment, rather than to my Microsoft account.

Could you please investigate why Teams is treating my personal Hotmail account as if it were not registered for Teams? I would appreciate confirmation of whether this is a known compatibility or authentication issue affecting OnePlus devices running Chinese firmware, and any device-specific workaround or fix.

I would prefer not to create a new Microsoft account, unlock the bootloader, change firmware, or factory-reset my phone unless there is a confirmed technical reason to do so.

Device details:

  • Device: OnePlus Ace 2 Pro
  • Model: PJA110
  • Android version: 16
  • Firmware: PJA110_16.0.5.1201(CN01B100P01)
  • Teams: Official Google Play version; the same issue occurs in the beta version
  • Account type: Personal Microsoft account (@hotmail.com)
  • Country of use: Spain

Thank you for your assistance. I look forward to a technical explanation and a solution.

    Hi @Ra R S

Your testing is very thorough, and I agree with your conclusion. If the same Hotmail account works in Teams on another phone, the account is fine, and something about this device's environment is making Teams treat the sign-in as a work or school one. That's what "check that the organization has invited you" refers to. I can't point to a documented cause for ColorOS China ROMs, but there are two sign-in routes that skip the normal email flow and are worth trying.

    1. Sign in with a QR code from your PC. Sign in to Teams on your computer with the Hotmail account. In Teams for personal use, open the ... menu and choose Sign in on your phone, then scan the QR code with the OnePlus. This hands over the personal session directly.
    2. Use "Add account" inside the app. If Teams on the phone opens to any screen at all, go to your profile picture > Add account and add the Hotmail account there as a personal account, instead of using the first sign-in screen.
    3. If neither works, use Settings > Help & feedback > Report a problem in the Teams app right after a failed attempt. That sends the app logs to Microsoft, which is the most useful way to get a device-specific issue looked at.

Since your system properties still show a zh-CN product locale, a change of region alone may not help. The QR route is the one most likely to get around it.

Does the QR code option work, or does it end at the same error?

If this got you signed in, please consider accepting it as the answer. If both routes fail, let me know and I'll be happy to keep helping.

    This is the issue:

"Checked the Android locale and system properties using ADB. The device retains Chinese product locale settings (zh-CN), while the user language settings are es-MX,en-US"

Your device is treated as being located in China. Personal Teams accounts are no longer available in China.

I don't know if you will be able to change the locale settings while using the original Chinese ColorOS ROM. My guess is that your phone is supposed to be used only from within China.

Use Teams Personal on a computer to generate its mobile sign-in QR code, because this invokes the documented personal-account mobile sign-in path without repeating the password-based flow that is failing on the OnePlus.

    Try the QR-code sign-in path

    1. On a computer, open Teams for personal use and sign in with the same Hotmail account.
    2. Select … → Sign in on your phone.
    3. Open the camera on the OnePlus and scan the displayed QR code.
    4. Allow the link to open in Teams.
    5. Check whether Teams opens under the Hotmail identity in Profile picture/More → Accounts and Orgs.

Microsoft documents QR-code sign-in specifically for signing an existing Microsoft account into Teams Personal on mobile. A Hotmail/Outlook.com account is already a Microsoft account, so creating another account should not be necessary.^1^

As a temporary alternative, use Teams Personal on the web on the phone or computer. The same documentation provides the web sign-in procedure for an existing personal account.^1^

    Compatibility status

Microsoft supports Teams Personal on Android devices running one of the last four major Android versions.^2^ However, the published requirements do not establish whether this particular Android 16 ColorOS build is compatible.

There is currently no cited Microsoft documentation confirming a known defect specifically for:

    • OnePlus Ace 2 Pro/PJA110
    • Firmware PJA110_16.0.5.1201(CN01B100P01)
    • Chinese ColorOS product locale zh-CN
    • Teams Personal authentication on that combination

Similar Android personal-account failures have been reported, including accounts that work elsewhere but fail in the Android client, but the available case does not have an accepted or recommended resolution.^3^

Therefore, the displayed organization/invitation message does not prove that the Hotmail account needs an organizational invitation. Teams Personal officially accepts an existing Microsoft account.^1^

    If QR sign-in also fails

Since app-data clearing, stable WebView, production and beta Teams, Play Protect certification, and another-device testing are already complete, avoid a factory reset, bootloader unlock, firmware replacement, or new account unless Microsoft identifies a specific requirement.

Submit a diagnostic report immediately after reproducing the failure:

    1. Open Teams.
    2. Tap profile picture → Settings → Help and feedback → Send feedback.
    3. Enable Attach logs to help troubleshoot.
    4. Include:
      • Exact error text and time of reproduction, including time zone.
      • Device model, Android version, and complete firmware build.
      • Teams version from Profile picture → Settings → About.
      • The fact that the same account works in Teams on another phone.
      • Results of the QR-code attempt.
      • That both production and beta builds fail after app-data clearing.
      • The locale combination zh-CN with es-MX,en-US.

Teams mobile logs contain process and component information useful for diagnosing the app’s sign-in path; Microsoft notes that some error types may include usernames or email addresses, so review that privacy consideration before submitting.^4^

If the attachment switch is unavailable, enable Profile picture → Settings → Privacy → Optional Diagnostic Data, reproduce the problem, and send feedback again. Connected-experience or diagnostic-data settings can affect whether troubleshooting information can be attached.^5^

Use the Contact us option on the Teams Personal support page and reference the submitted feedback. Request correlation of the mobile authentication logs with the exact timestamp and ask specifically whether the Android client is incorrectly routing the personal Microsoft account into an organizational sign-in flow.
