Check the delayed Instagram message’s actual sender address, add that address or domain to Outlook.com’s Safe Senders list, and then request a new Instagram code.
Fix the Instagram-specific delivery
Use Outlook.com in a browser because the problem appears in both the app and web:
- Open Junk Email and Other, then search all folders for:
-
Instagram
-
security code
- the sender address shown on the previously delayed message
- If found in Junk, select it and choose Report → Not junk. Microsoft recommends checking both Junk and Other when a particular message is missing.^1^
- Open Settings → Mail → Junk email:
- Remove the Instagram sender or domain from Blocked senders and domains, if present.
- Under Safe senders and domains, select Add safe sender, enter the exact address or domain from the old Instagram message, select OK, and then Save.^2^
- Request one new code from Instagram. A code that arrived yesterday is likely no longer usable.
- Keep Outlook.com open, sort by Date, and check Inbox, Other, and Junk.
Do not trust a guessed sender address. Add only the address or domain visible on the genuine Instagram message you previously received.
Send a normal test message to the Hotmail address from another unrelated account.
- If the test arrives: Outlook.com is generally receiving mail, so the problem is specific to Instagram’s delivery. Microsoft’s guidance for one missing sender is to contact that sender and have them investigate delivery to Outlook.com.^3^ Use Instagram’s account-recovery or support process and report that its security messages are delayed or not arriving.
- If the test does not arrive: check these account-level settings in Outlook.com:
- Settings → Mail → Forwarding — turn off unexpected forwarding.
- Settings → Mail → Rules — disable rules that delete, redirect, or move incoming messages.
- Check mailbox/cloud storage. If Microsoft cloud storage is full, Outlook.com cannot receive mail; messages sent while it was full are bounced and cannot be recovered, so Instagram must send a new code after space is available.^3^
If other senders work but Instagram still does not, changing phones, browsers, or reinstalling Outlook will not address the sender-specific delivery path. Instagram must resend the message or provide another account-recovery method.
If test messages from multiple unrelated senders also fail after checking storage, forwarding, and rules:
- Sign in to Outlook.com.
- Select Help (?) on the menu bar.
- Describe the receiving problem.
- Scroll to Still need help? and select Yes to contact Outlook.com Support.^3^
Include the approximate send time, the sender domain, whether any sender received a bounce message, and whether the independent test email arrived.
