I am trying to access a deactivated email from when I was in college as I have accounts that are tied to that email that I can change without being able to access said email. Is there any way that I am able to access this email? I have already tried reaching out to my college and they were unable to help.

It’s important to understand that Microsoft does not have the authority to manage individual users within an organization. Each organization’s IT department is responsible for managing its own users, following its own protocols and security policies. Microsoft’s role is to support the organization’s IT administrators by providing tools—not to bypass them or intervene directly.

Imagine a situation where a disgruntled former employee—or student—gets fired or removed and then contacts Microsoft to regain access to sensitive internal data, or to impersonate as someone representing the organization by using the organization's email address. If Microsoft were to help them directly without the organization’s knowledge or approval, it would be a major breach of privacy and security. That’s why Microsoft strictly defers to the organization’s IT department for any user account matters.

I am sorry, you do need the school's blessing to reinstate the email. If they say no, it is NOT Microsoft's place to override that decision.

    Hi cameron opalacz,

Unfortunately, if your college email account has been deactivated and the institution has confirmed they cannot restore it, there is usually no way to regain access from the Microsoft side. Educational accounts are managed by the school, so only their IT administrators can reactivate or recover them.

May I ask how long ago the account was deactivated or when you last had access to it?

This is important because schools may retain deactivated mailboxes only for a limited period before permanently deleting them. The exact retention period depends on the institution's policies.

Since you've already contacted the college and they were unable to assist, it's possible that the account is no longer available for recovery. I understand this can be frustrating, especially when you need access to older emails.

Please let me know how long the account has been deactivated, and I can help determine whether there may still be any recovery options available or not.
