Hello, I need help with BitLocker on Windows 11.

My BitLocker decryption was initially running but remained at 30.6% for approximately two hours. I manually paused the process using manage-bde -pause C:. When I tried to resume it using manage-bde -resume C:, I received error 0x803100d6.

Current status:

  • Conversion Status: Decryption Paused
  • Percentage Encrypted: 30.6%
  • Protection Status: Off
  • Lock Status: Unlocked
  • Key Protectors: None Found

I have run CHKDSK, repaired corrupted Windows system files using SFC, restarted Windows, and freed up disk space. However, the BitLocker issue persists.

I want to safely restore Device Encryption without formatting Windows or losing personal files. I do not have a backup or recovery key.

What is the safest way to resolve this error?

Hello, thank you for your response.

Here are the additional details you requested:

    1. Computer ownership: This is my personal laptop, not managed by a workplace or school.
    2. Device Encryption: Windows was already installed when I purchased the laptop. I only signed in with my own Microsoft account, so I believe Device Encryption may have been enabled automatically.
    3. Windows/BIOS/driver updates: I am not sure whether the issue started after a Windows, BIOS, firmware, or storage-driver update.
    4. Manufacturer: HP
    5. Model: Victus by HP Gaming Laptop 15-fa2xxx

I have already run CHKDSK, DISM, and SFC. SFC successfully repaired corrupted Windows files, but BitLocker remains paused at 30.6%, and the resume command still returns error 0x803100d6.

I understand the importance of protecting my files. However, I currently do not have an external backup drive or a recovery key.

Could you please advise whether there are any additional read-only diagnostic steps I can safely perform before attempting further repairs?

    Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi luttfi firda,

Thank you for providing the detailed BitLocker status and explaining what you’ve already tried. Since the drive is still unlocked but partially encrypted, with decryption paused and no key protectors available, I would treat protecting your files as the immediate priority.

Before trying any further BitLocker changes, please copy your important files to an external drive or another safe location while Windows can still access them. Until that backup is complete, avoid clearing the TPM, changing Secure Boot or firmware settings, modifying partitions, resetting Windows or repeatedly running BitLocker commands, as you do not currently have a recovery key if the drive becomes locked.

A couple of details may help narrow down what caused the conversion state to become stuck:

    • Is this a personal computer or is it managed by a workplace or school?
    • Did Device Encryption turn on automatically during the initial setup or did you enable it manually?
    • Did the problem begin after a Windows, BIOS, firmware or storage-driver update?
    • What is the computer’s make and model?

Because the displayed conversion state and the resume error do not agree, I would not recommend trying to turn Device Encryption back on yet. Once your files are safely backed up, the safest next step is to have the BitLocker conversion state reviewed through the appropriate support channel or by the device manufacturer. Device Encryption should only be enabled again after the drive has fully decrypted and a new recovery key can be created and saved separately.

I hope this helps you protect your files and avoid making the current situation more difficult to recover from.
