Reset the affected account in Outlook for iOS first; this refreshes its connection without immediately deleting the account.
If you use the Outlook app
- Confirm the iPhone has a working Wi-Fi or cellular connection. Temporarily disconnect any VPN.
- Open Outlook.
- Tap your profile picture, then Settings.
- Select the affected email account.
- Tap Reset Account, then reopen Outlook and allow several minutes for email to synchronize.
- If Outlook itself freezes or will not open:
- Swipe up from the bottom of the Home Screen and pause.
- Find Outlook and swipe its preview upward to close it.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Update Outlook from the App Store.
- If it still will not open, go to iPhone Settings → General → iPhone Storage → Outlook → Offload App, and then reinstall/reopen it. Offloading preserves the app’s documents and data. ^1^
If resetting does not work
Remove only the account from Outlook and add it again:
- In Outlook, open Settings → Accounts.
- Select the affected account.
- Tap Delete Account → Delete From This Device.
- Restart the iPhone.
- Open Outlook and select Add Account, or go to Settings → Account → Add Account → Email Account.
- Enter the business email address and complete the password and multifactor-authentication prompts. ^2^
Deleting the account from the device does not delete messages stored in the Microsoft 365 mailbox, but unsent local drafts should be copied elsewhere first.
For a company-managed phone, complete any prompts from Microsoft Authenticator or Intune Company Portal. Organization policies may require device registration, app protection, or enrollment before Outlook can load company email. ^2^
If you mean Apple’s built-in Mail app
If Mail displays “Please enter the password,” “Account not authenticated,” or “Cannot Get Mail – The connection to the server failed,” reauthenticate the account:
- Open iPhone Settings → Mail → Accounts.
- Select the Outlook account.
- Open Account Settings or the password field, depending on the iOS version.
- Enter the correct password and tap Done.
- Reopen Mail and test sending and receiving. ^3^
If email still does not load
- Test the mailbox in Outlook on the web or on a computer.
- If it also fails there, or this is a Microsoft 365 business account, contact the organization’s Microsoft 365 administrator or IT support.
- If web/desktop email works and there is no service outage, the problem is localized to the mobile app. Microsoft specifically directs business and Exchange account users to their administrator or technical support for unresolved mobile sign-in and sync problems. ^1^
When escalating, provide the exact error message, whether Outlook opens at all, the iPhone/iOS version, and whether the mailbox works in a browser.
