"Working on your request" animation is broken and it's breaking the bot responses

Agent published through Microsoft Foundry to Teams & Copilot

  • When I chat with the agent directly on Teams there are no issues
  • When I chat with the agent in a group-chat, then sometimes (a LOT of times) the agent's response will not be displayed. BUT - and this is the head-scratcher - there are no issues on Teams Mobile app. Teams mobile always works. Teams web version is a hit and miss, sometimes it shows, sometimes not.
  • Clearing Teams Local Cache (%LocalAppData%\Packages\MSTeams_8wekyb3d8bbwe\LocalCache) and re-launching teams desktop app also fixes but temporarily. Eventually the issue returns.
  • If I "reply with quotes" on the empty gray box, the response will be visible.

I have traced the problem down to this:

  • The empty gray box is actually the progress bar, not agent's response.
  • This is a Teams desktop rendering issue, not agent, not bot service, not Teams integration. Remember I can chat one-on-one with the bot, no issues there.

Here are a few screenshots.

This is driving me crazy.

this is the animation that is displayed when you are chatting with the agent / bot one-on-one. This animation is the problem when you are chatting with the agent in a group chat. it cannot be rendered and then you get no updates and the final response is not displayed.

launching teams in web and trying to do many SHIFT+F5s sometimes ends up displaying the message, but mostly not. User's image

and today I saw some other weird behavior (again, please remember that I can talk to this agent in Copilot, in Mobile Team, in one-on-one WITHOUT ANY ISSUES; so it's NOT the Teams harness, it's not the Bot, it's not Foundry). first I saw the empty gray box and then the response appeared on a different gray area right afterwards.

Notes: Streaming endpoint is not checked on Azure Bot Services.

I would appreciate some help on this before I lose it, please :-)

Kindest regards I have a similar but dissimilar problem and these two may be related. After spending about half a day and working with copilot debugging the issue here is the clearest problem description.

    Dear Jim,

As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly review your agent's configuration or your tenant's Teams client logs to diagnose and fix this for you. Unfortunately, my role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

From my research, the gray box with the Stop button is the streaming indicator Teams shows while a bot is sending a response in progress. According to Microsoft's documentation, bot streaming is currently supported only in one on one chats, not in group chats or channels. That would explain why the agent works in a direct chat and in Copilot but fails in group chats, where the streaming state never finishes rendering. Mobile may simply handle that unsupported state more gracefully. You can review the limitations here: Stream agent messages - Teams | Microsoft Learn

For problems of this nature, I recommend that the Global Admin in your organization create a service request with Microsoft Support. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

For additional assistance, use this link to find the appropriate contact number from your region: Contact Microsoft customer support | Microsoft Support

I truly hope you get your issue resolved swiftly. Please know that even though I can't directly intervene, directing you to the correct, specialized support is the most effective help I can provide from my position. Thank you for your patience and understanding. Please let me know if you need anything else. Wishing you all the best.
