Why do I have to suddenly pay a subscription for word when I have been using it for free for MANY MANY years? I still use the same laptop and now it askes me to pay?? This is ridiculous, why would it tell me to pay now and not when I first installed Microsoft office?

Subscription versions of Office are called Microsoft 365 Personal, Microsoft 365 Family, or Microsoft 365 Premium, and those always require regular payments, monthly or yearly.

Maybe you have been using a one-time payment (perpetual) license? These are called Office, specifically Office Home & Business 2024 (which is the most recent one) or Office Home & Business 2021 (which is an older version). One-time payment versions only require that you pay once.

In your Office apps, you may see an ad that "encourages" you to get a subscription version, but that alone does not mean that your installation has become deactivated.

Start Word and click File > Account. Do you see an activation error message?

Your account at https://account.microsoft.com/services should tell you which Office product(s) you have.

    Hi,

I would like to let you know that Microsoft 365 always required a subscription to pay.

I will walk through a few steps with you. Some of these are just to help figure out what is wrong, not to fix it right away. So if nothing changes after a step, that is normal. I will keep going until we solve it.

Please go to https://account.microsoft.com/services page and take a screenshot of the same. Please post that in the next reply.

I look forward to hearing from you to get the results of the troubleshooting.

Do you remember anything at all about the lost, older version of Office? Have you ever seen this version in a Microsoft account? You can check your various @hotmail.com and @outlook.com accounts at https://account.microsoft.com/services and, with a bit of luck, you will be able to find the correct account and the correct product.

If Office was preinstalled when you purchased your computer, restoring it might be more difficult, though, or even impossible.

Do not purchase a subscription yet; first check whether Word has lost access to an existing one-time Office license or an expired subscription.

Check what license you already own

    1. Close Word and other Office applications.
    2. Open Services & subscriptions and sign in with the Microsoft account originally used to obtain Office.
    3. Look under Subscriptions, Cancelled subscriptions, or purchased products:
      • Office 2016/2019/2021/2024 or a standalone Word purchase: this is a one-time license, so you should activate that product rather than buy Microsoft 365.
      • Microsoft 365 marked expired: the installed desktop Word depended on that subscription and requires renewal for continued desktop use.
      • No Office product listed: try any other personal email address that may have been used when Office was first installed or purchased.

Microsoft states that using the wrong account can produce “We couldn't find any Office products” and leave Office unlicensed.^1^

    Restore an existing license

If the correct Office product appears in the account:

    1. Open Word → File → Account.
    2. Sign out of any account currently shown.
    3. Sign back in with the account that owns the listed Office product.
    4. If offered, select Activate Product or Reactivate.
    5. Close and reopen Word.

If Word remains unlicensed, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Microsoft’s activation-support page. It must run on the affected computer and requires Windows 10 or later.^1^

Also check Control Panel → Programs → Programs and Features. Search for “Office.” If multiple Office versions are installed, they can conflict with activation. Uninstall only the version you do not own or use, restart Windows, and reactivate the remaining version.^1^

If Office came with the laptop

Preinstalled Office is not always a permanent free copy. It may have been:

    • A time-limited Microsoft 365 offer.
    • A subscription supplied by an employer, school, or another family member.
    • A one-time purchase digitally associated with the Microsoft account used during initial setup.

For an included one-time purchase or Microsoft 365 offer, the license is activated by signing in and is then added to that Microsoft account.^2^

The fact that this is the same laptop does not by itself confirm which license was originally used. The decisive information is what appears under Services & subscriptions and in Word → File → Account.

    Use Word without paying

If no desktop license belongs to the account, Word’s web version remains free:

    1. Go to Microsoft365.com.
    2. Sign in with a free Microsoft account.
    3. Open Word from the app launcher.
    4. Upload an existing document or create a new one.

Free accounts receive the web versions of Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; the installed desktop Word application requires an eligible desktop license or subscription.^3^
