A cloud-based identity and access management service for securing user authentication and resource access
The 8-digit code shown under your personal Microsoft account in Authenticator is not the code Azure is requesting. Your Azure tenant uses a separate work or school (Microsoft Entra) identity registration, so that personal-account code will not satisfy the tenant MFA challenge.
Use this recovery order:
- On the Azure sign-in page, select Sign in another way. If SMS, a security key, recovery code, or another registered method is available, use it. After signing in, go to https://aka.ms/mysecurityinfo, remove the stale Authenticator registration, and register the phone again.
- If another administrator exists, ask that administrator to open Microsoft Entra admin center > Entra ID > Users > your account > Authentication methods. They should delete the unusable Authenticator method or select Require re-register multifactor authentication. A properly scoped Temporary Access Pass (TAP) is usually the safer way to bootstrap a new method. Microsoft documents the process here:
- If you are genuinely the only administrator and no alternative method works, this cannot be bypassed or reset by the Q&A community. Contact Microsoft Support and state clearly: personal Microsoft account can sign in; the associated Microsoft Entra tenant's only administrator is locked out by an unavailable MFA registration. Ask for a tenant-access/account-recovery case to be routed to the team that performs ownership and identity verification. Do not post your tenant ID, subscription ID, invoices, or identity documents in this public thread.
After access is restored, create two cloud-only emergency access accounts, monitor their use, and register more than one phishing-resistant authentication method so one lost device cannot lock out the tenant.
Before contacting support, please confirm whether the affected Azure sign-in name ends in your personal email domain or an onmicrosoft.com tenant domain, and whether Sign in another way shows any alternative method. That will help distinguish the personal Microsoft account from the Entra administrator identity.
