Request to Recover Microsoft 365 License from Former School Account

Hello Microsoft Support,

I need help recovering my Microsoft Office license. When I was a student at Al Mawakeb Al Garhoud, my school provided me with a Microsoft 365 license, which I used on my laptop without any issues.

I recently reset my laptop, and now Office is asking me to enter a product key. When I try signing in with my old school email address, I receive a message saying that the account cannot be found. I have since graduated, and I never purchased Office separately because it was provided by my school.

Could you please check whether my original Office license can be recovered or transferred to a new Microsoft account? I would appreciate your help restoring access to Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Thank you for your assistance.

    Hi @Sami Mounajed,

Just to gently clarify before going any further, this forum is a user-to-user community forum and is separate from Microsoft Support. Contributors here do not have access to Microsoft's internal systems, so we cannot look up accounts, verify licenses, recover subscriptions, or determine the status of school-managed Microsoft 365 licenses. However, I'd be happy to share some information that may help.

Since the Microsoft 365 license was provided through your school account, it was managed by your school. Schools may reclaim Microsoft 365 Education licenses after students graduate, which can cause previously activated Office applications to become unlicensed.

If possible, please contact the IT administrator or technical support team at Al Mawakeb Al Garhoud and kindly ask them to check whether your former account was disabled or deleted, and whether the associated Microsoft 365 Education license can still be restored under the school's policies. They are in the best position and have the necessary administrative access to review the status of your former school account and any licenses assigned to it. Microsoft also generally recommends contacting the educational institution directly for issues involving a school-managed account.

Please note that an Education license generally cannot be transferred to a personal Microsoft account. If the school confirms that your former account and license cannot be restored because you have graduated or the account has been permanently removed, you will need to obtain a separate Microsoft 365 or Office license using your personal Microsoft account.

I hope this suggestion helps point you to the team that is best positioned to assist with your situation.

Thank you so much for taking the time.

The school-provided Microsoft 365 license cannot be transferred to a personal Microsoft account; contact the school’s IT administrator to ask whether they can restore the former account or assign an eligible license.

    What to do

    1. Contact Al Mawakeb Al Garhoud’s IT department or Microsoft 365 administrator. Ask them to check:
      • Whether the former student account was deleted or disabled.
      • Whether the Microsoft 365 Apps license was removed.
      • Whether the school offers continued access for graduates.
Schools assign licenses to users or student groups, and licenses can be removed when users leave those groups.^1^ Microsoft’s education guidance also explicitly supports removing or disabling graduating accounts as part of the school’s account-lifecycle process.^2^
    2. If the school restores the account and assigns an Office license, reinstall or open Microsoft 365 and activate it by signing in with that school account. Microsoft 365 subscriptions activate through the licensed account rather than by entering a reusable product key.
    3. If the school confirms that graduate access has ended, that education license cannot be recovered personally or moved to another Microsoft account. Education licenses are generally temporary and cannot be reactivated after eligibility ends.^3^

Check for a separate personal license

Only do this if Office might also have been purchased separately with a personal Microsoft account:

    1. Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
    2. Sign in with each personal email address that may have been used for an Office purchase.
    3. If Office or Microsoft 365 appears, install it from that page and activate by signing in with that same personal account.

Microsoft Support confirms that a product or subscription associated with an account appears under Services & subscriptions; if it is absent, that email address cannot activate it.^4^

If there was no separate personal purchase and the school will not restore or relicense the account, the available options are Office on the web or purchasing a personal Microsoft 365 subscription or one-time Office license. Reinstalling Office or running activation repair tools will not restore a license that the school has removed.
