If the Verify your identity screen offers I don’t have any of these, use that option to replace your security information; otherwise, the school’s IT administrator must verify whether the account still exists and reset its MFA registration.
This is different from choosing another verification method:
- Start signing in to the school account.
- At Verify your identity, look for I don’t have any of these.
- If it appears, select it and follow the instructions to replace your security information.
- Microsoft states that you may then need to wait 30 days before signing in. If you regain access to an existing verification method during that period and use it, the replacement request is cancelled. ^1^
If that option is missing or fails, proceed directly to the school’s IT team.
2. Ask the school to check account existence separately from MFA
The “account doesn’t exist” message does not conclusively establish deletion in this case, especially because you receive it for another school account known to be active. Ask the school help desk to check:
- The exact sign-in ID/username, which might not be the same as the mailbox address.
- Whether the account exists in the school’s Microsoft Entra tenant.
- Whether it is disabled, deleted, expired, or no longer licensed.
- Whether former-student accounts are retained or removed under the school’s policy.
For a real person, contact the technical-support or IT-help-desk link on the school’s main website. If none is listed, contact the registrar/student-services office or the person who originally provided the account and ask for the Microsoft 365 or Microsoft Entra administrator. Microsoft specifically directs school users to their school’s technical-support team. ^2^
Provide them with:
- Your name and student ID.
- The affected school email address.
- When you last successfully used it.
- A screenshot of the exact error, with personal details concealed.
- A reachable personal email or phone number.
- The fact that all registered verification methods are unavailable.
3. If the account exists, request an MFA reset
Ask the administrator to perform these steps:
- Sign in to the Microsoft Entra admin center as at least an Authentication Administrator.
- Go to Entra ID → Users.
- Select your account.
- Open Authentication methods.
- Select Require re-register MFA.
- If appropriate, also select Revoke sessions.
Require re-register MFA removes the existing Authenticator, phone, and software-token registrations and prompts you to configure MFA again at your next sign-in. ^3^
After the reset, sign in and register Authenticator on the device you currently control. Add a second method if the school permits it.
Authenticator restoration limitation
Reinstalling or restoring Authenticator by itself generally will not recover access to a school account. For work or school accounts, an Authenticator backup restores only the account name; you must sign in again to complete recovery. ^4^
If the administrator confirms that the account was deleted, MFA recovery cannot restore it. The school must determine whether its retention policy permits restoring or recreating the account and whether any mailbox data remains recoverable.
