    Hi, @Karen Shanks

The files are fine. Excel is showing "Unlicensed" because Office is not activated with the Microsoft account that accepted the Microsoft 365 Family invitation.

Please check https://account.microsoft.com/services using the invited account and confirm Microsoft 365 Family appears there.

Then open Excel > "File" > "Account" and make sure the same account is signed in. If a different account is shown, sign out, close Excel, reopen it, and sign in with the invited account.

If it still shows "Unlicensed", what does Excel show under "File" > "Account" > "Product Information"?

Click "Add comment" to let me know.

    Thanks!

Sign in to Excel with the exact Microsoft account that accepted the Family invitation, then use File > Account > Update License to replace the expired personal license with the shared Family entitlement.

    Refresh the license in Excel

    1. Close all other Microsoft 365 applications.
    2. Open the Microsoft account Services & subscriptions page: https://account.microsoft.com/services
    3. Sign in with the same email address that accepted the Family invitation.
    4. Confirm that Microsoft 365 Family appears as an active subscription shared with you. Membership in the family group and access to the subscription benefits are related but distinct; the shared subscription must be visible on this account.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription")
    5. Open Excel and select File > Account.
    6. Check the account shown there:
      • If it is your old or another account, sign out.
      • Sign back in with the exact account from step 3.
    7. Under Product Information, select Update License and complete the prompts.
    8. Close and reopen Excel when prompted. Then return to File > Account and confirm that Microsoft 365 is displayed as the licensed product.

Update License is specifically intended to refresh a new entitlement immediately; otherwise, a new license can take up to 72 hours to appear automatically.^2^

Your existing Excel files do not need to be converted or moved. The expired subscription leaves Office in reduced-functionality mode, where files can be viewed but not edited; the files themselves remain intact.[^3^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "What happens when your Microsoft 365 subscription expires | Microsoft Support")

If the Family subscription is not listed

Ask the subscription owner to open their Microsoft 365 sharing page and check that your entry is active rather than Pending invite. They should use the same email address that you use for your Microsoft account. Do not try to activate with the owner’s account or product key; shared members activate with their own invited Microsoft accounts.[^1^](https://support.microsoft.com/accounts-billing/subscriptions/[Subscription ID] "Share your Microsoft 365 subscription")

    If it remains “Unlicensed Product”

    1. In Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features, search for Office.
    2. If more than one Office version is installed, uninstall only the version you no longer use, restart Windows, and reopen Excel.
    3. If only one version is installed, run the Microsoft 365 activation troubleshooter from Microsoft’s Unlicensed Product support page. It must run on the affected PC and requires Windows 10 or later.
    4. If activation still fails, use Online Repair for the remaining Microsoft 365 installation.

Multiple Office installations can conflict with activation, and Microsoft recommends the activation troubleshooter before deeper manual repair.^4^
