Windows 11 Camera Roll Not Saving to OneDrive? Check the Camera Roll Library Location

I have encountered an issue on three separate Windows 11 computers within our organisation.

All three devices are Microsoft Entra ID joined and managed within the same environment, with OneDrive configured to back up the standard user folders, including Pictures.

Following Windows updates, photographs taken using the default Windows Camera application were no longer appearing in the expected OneDrive Camera Roll folder.

While investigating, I noticed that Camera Roll was accessible through the following location:

C:\Users\<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Camera Roll

When I checked the Camera Roll library properties, the configured location was pointing to:

C:\Users\<Username>\Pictures

rather than the expected OneDrive location:

C:\Users\<Username>\OneDrive - <Organisation>\Pictures\Camera Roll

Interestingly, this has only occurred on three computers so far, despite other devices having similar configurations and management policies.

Although the issue was noticed following Windows updates, I have not been able to establish whether a specific update is responsible.

My questions are:

Has anyone else experienced Camera Roll library locations changing unexpectedly on Windows 11 devices using OneDrive Known Folder Move?

Could Windows updates, OneDrive updates or Known Folder Move configuration changes cause the Camera Roll library to revert to a local Pictures directory?

Is there a known Microsoft issue or recommended method for preventing this behaviour?

I have managed to resolve the issue on the affected computers by correcting the Camera Roll library configuration through File Explorer.

I will share the steps I followed, along with screenshots, in an answer below in case it helps anyone experiencing the same problem.

I recently encountered an issue on three separate Windows 11 computers managed within our organisation.

All three computers were Microsoft Entra ID joined, with OneDrive configured to back up the standard user folders.

Following Windows updates, we noticed that photographs taken using the default Windows Camera application were no longer appearing in the expected OneDrive Camera Roll folder.

Instead, the photographs appeared when opening Camera Roll through the Windows Libraries directory: C:\Users<Username>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries\Camera Roll

After investigating, I found that the Camera Roll library was referencing the user's local Pictures folder rather than the intended OneDrive Camera Roll location.

I was able to correct the library configuration using File Explorer, without modifying the registry or reinstalling OneDrive.

Steps I followed to resolve the issue

Step 1: Open the Windows Libraries folder

  1. Open File Explorer and navigate to: %APPDATA%\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries
  2. Locate the Camera Roll library. img_1 img_2

Step 2: Open Camera Roll Properties

  • Right-click the Camera Roll library and select Properties. img_3

Step 3: Check the configured library locations

  • Under the Library tab, review the folders currently included.
  • On the affected computer, the library was referencing: C:\Users<Username>\Pictures rather than the intended OneDrive Camera Roll folder. img_4

Step 4: Add the correct OneDrive Camera Roll folder

  1. Click Add....
  2. Navigate to your organisation-managed OneDrive directory, then open: Pictures\Camera Roll For example: C:\Users<Username>\OneDrive - <CompanyName>\Pictures\Camera Roll
  3. Select the folder and click Include folder. img_5 img_6

Step 5: Remove the incorrect location

  1. The library should now show both the original local Pictures location and the newly added OneDrive Camera Roll location.
  2. Select the original local Pictures entry and click Remove.

Note: Be careful to remove only the library reference, not the physical folder or any photographs stored in it.

Step 6: Apply the changes

  1. Confirm that the intended OneDrive Camera Roll folder is the remaining library location.
  2. Click Apply, followed by OK. img_9

Outcome

This correction addressed the Camera Roll library configuration issue I encountered.

  • I have observed similar behaviour on three Windows 11 computers within the same managed environment, although it has not affected every computer.
  • The incidents were noticed following Windows updates, but I have not established that a particular update caused the configuration change.
  • It is also worth noting that Windows stores library definitions in the AppData directory. Seeing Camera Roll under AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Libraries does not necessarily mean the actual photographs are physically stored there.

The important distinction is between the library's displayed contents, its configured locations, and the actual storage destination used by the Camera application.

If you encounter this issue, I recommend checking the Camera Roll library configuration before attempting more invasive troubleshooting.

    Hi @Michael O,

Thank you for documenting this behavior.

At this time, I could not find a published Microsoft known issue confirming that Windows 11, OneDrive, or Known Folder Move can unexpectedly reset the Camera Roll library to the local Pictures folder. Microsoft documents that Camera Roll normally resides under the Pictures library and may be recreated if it is missing, but the specific behavior you observed has not been officially confirmed.

Regarding whether an update or configuration change could cause this, it is technically possible, but there is currently no official confirmation that this is an expected or known outcome. Based on my initial thoughts and experience, it may result from the Camera Roll library being recreated, inconsistent known-folder registration, or a policy or configuration change affecting the redirected Pictures folder. These are only possible explanations rather than confirmed causes.

I would appreciate it if you could share the steps and screenshots you used to correct the library configuration, as they may help other users experiencing the same behavior.

I think it would be helpful for both of us to continue monitoring this thread to see whether other users report the same behavior or identify a common Windows or OneDrive build. If possible, please also share the Windows OS build and OneDrive version from the affected devices so that others can compare their environments.

Thank you again for documenting the issue and sharing your findings with the community.

The supported guidance indicates that Windows Camera saves captured photos and videos to the Camera Roll folder by default, and OneDrive can sync or redirect content under Pictures when configured to do so. It also confirms that Windows and OneDrive save locations can be changed, but the provided material does not identify a known Microsoft issue where Windows 11, OneDrive updates, or Known Folder Move specifically reset the Camera Roll library location from OneDrive back to the local Pictures folder.

Supported facts relevant to this scenario:

    1. Camera app default behavior Photos and videos taken with the built-in camera or webcam are saved by default to the Camera Roll folder.
    2. Windows save location can affect new photos and videos In Windows 11, check Start > Settings > System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved and review New photos and videos will save to. If needed, change it to another location, select Apply, then change it back to the intended location and select Apply again.
    3. A missing or misconfigured Camera Roll folder can be repaired If Camera Roll is missing or not working correctly, create a new Camera Roll folder on the OS disk, then in File Explorer include it in the Camera Roll library:
      • Start > File Explorer > This PC > OSDisk (C:)
      • New > Folder and name it Camera Roll
      • Right-click the folder > Include in library > Camera Roll
      • On Windows 11, use Show more options first if needed
    4. Permissions can also block saving In File Explorer > Pictures > Camera Roll > Properties > Security, confirm the signed-in user has Write permission allowed.
    5. OneDrive behavior Windows 10/11 can save files to OneDrive by default for eligible users, and OneDrive can back up standard folders such as Pictures. In managed environments, Microsoft also documents redirecting known folders including Pictures, Screenshots, and Camera Roll to OneDrive.

Based on the available documentation, the recommended prevention and validation approach is:

    • Verify the Windows save target for new photos and videos.
    • Verify that the Camera Roll library still points to the intended folder.
    • Verify that Pictures remains redirected or backed up by OneDrive as expected.
    • Verify Write permissions on the effective Camera Roll folder.
    • If the folder is missing or broken, recreate it and re-add it to the Camera Roll library.

The provided material does not document a specific update, bug ID, or Microsoft-known issue matching the exact behavior described across those three Windows 11 devices.
