Are you using the Office apps on a Windows PC or on an Apple Mac computer?

    1

If you are using the Office apps on a Windows device:

    Open Excel.

At the top right of Excel, log out of Office.

Restart (not shut down) your PC, then log back into Office, is your licence then recognized correctly.

If not, open Excel, go to File - Account.

Please provide a screenshot of that window and please hide your Email address in the screenshot.

If you are using the Office apps on an Apple Mac computer:

At the top left of your Mac desktop, click the Apple icon and select 'About this Mac', what version of MacOS is installed on your computer?

If Excel opens but Save and Save As are unavailable or saving fails right after installing Office Home 2024, the most likely causes in this scenario are activation/sign-in issues or a file/location problem.

    Try these steps in order:

    1. Sign out of Excel, restart, and sign in again with the account that owns Office Home 2024
      • On Mac, use Excel > Sign Out.
      • Restart the device.
      • Open Excel again and sign in with the Microsoft account used to purchase Office Home 2024.
      • This matches cases where Save and Save As were greyed out because Office 2024 was not activated.
    2. If Office was installed from the Mac App Store, remove it and reinstall from the Microsoft account services page
      • The Mac App Store version can require a Microsoft 365 subscription and may not accept a one-time Office 2024 license.
      • Reinstall Office from the install option tied to the purchased Office Home 2024 license.
    3. If files are opening from OneDrive, download them to the local PC/Mac and save locally first
      • In one reported case after moving from Microsoft 365 to Office Home 2024, documents were still tied to OneDrive behavior.
      • If OneDrive Files On-Demand is enabled, keep a local copy of the file and test saving again.
    4. Try Excel’s quick save workarounds
      • File > Save As and save with a new file name.
      • Save the workbook to another location, such as the local hard disk.
      • Create a new workbook and try saving it to the same folder where the original file was stored.
      • Save the file as a different Excel file type, such as .xlsx or .xlsm instead of .xls.
    5. Check common save blockers
      • Make sure the destination drive has enough free space.
      • Make sure the folder allows Read, Write, Modify, and Delete permissions.
      • If saving to a network or external drive, try saving locally instead.
      • If antivirus software is running, temporarily disable it and test saving again.
      • If the file path is longer than 218 characters, shorten the folder path or file name.
    6. Test whether an add-in is blocking saves
      • Start Excel in Safe Mode and try saving a new workbook.
      • If saving works in Safe Mode, a third-party add-in or startup file is likely causing the issue.
    7. If the workbook still will not save, move the sheets into a new workbook
      • Press Shift+F11 to add a filler worksheet.
      • Select all original sheets except the filler sheet.
      • Right-click the grouped sheets and select Move or Copy.
      • In To Book, select (New Book), then select OK.
      • Save the new workbook.

If the problem started immediately after purchase and Save is greyed out, prioritize activation/sign-in first. If Excel is activated but only certain files fail to save, prioritize Save As to a new local file name/location and then check permissions, OneDrive, antivirus, and add-ins.
