I can't find Shape Fill tab In MS365 Word, Desktop. When I select Help, I'm directed to a closed forum on topic referring to PowerPoint. This used to be a trivial operation in earlier versions of MS Word for Desktop.

Select the shape first. In Word desktop, Shape Fill is not a separate tab. It appears on the ribbon under Shape Format or Drawing Tools Format after a shape or text box is selected.

Steps:

  1. In Word, insert or click an existing shape or text box.
  2. When the shape is selected, look at the ribbon for Shape Format or Drawing Tools Format.
  3. In the Shape Styles group, select the arrow next to Shape Fill.
  4. Choose one of these options:
    • a fill color
    • No Fill
    • More Fill Colors
    • Picture
    • Gradient
    • Texture
  5. If the window is narrow, some commands may be collapsed into smaller groups, so maximize the Word window and check again.

If the goal is to change text color inside the shape instead of the shape background, use Text Fill on the Drawing Tools Format tab.

If a pattern fill is needed:

  1. Right-click the shape.
  2. Select Format Shape.
  3. In the Format Shape pane, select Fill.
  4. Choose Pattern Fill.

If the goal is to remove the fill completely, use Shape Fill > No Fill.

My problem was solved with much guessing, trial and error, and recalling what worked in early versions of MS Word desktop. Since I'm a computer scientist with 5+ decades of experience, our objective always was to make functions easier in newer systems.
