Redeem the card through the correct Microsoft page first, then install Microsoft 365 using the same personal Microsoft account—the card type determines which redemption path applies.
1. Identify the card
If it says “Microsoft 365,” “Office,” or shows a 25-character key in the format XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX:
- Open https://setup.office.com/.
- Sign in with a personal Microsoft account or create one.
- Enter the 25-character key and select Next.
- Complete the prompts to associate the purchase with that account. This redemption is required only once.^1^
If the key is hidden, carefully remove the silver coating on the back. Do not enter barcodes or other numbers printed on the card.^2^
If it is a general Microsoft or Xbox gift card, it is not an Office product key. Redeem it to the Microsoft account as Store balance using the Redeem code option, and then use that balance for an eligible Microsoft Store purchase. If the retailer sold the wrong type of card, contact that retailer.^3^
2. If account verification is blocking redemption
Since verification is already failing, do not keep requesting codes repeatedly; excessive requests can cause a temporary block.
- Check the email account’s Junk/Spam folder. Valid Microsoft account verification messages come from
@accountprotection.microsoft.com.
- Confirm that the partially displayed email address or phone number belongs to you.
- If another verification method is offered, select it.
- If you cannot access any listed email address or phone number, select I don’t have any of these and follow the account-recovery prompts.
- If both accounts are Outlook, Hotmail, Live, or MSN addresses, keep the redemption page open and use a separate InPrivate window to access the mailbox containing the code.
- If repeated attempts may have caused a block, stop requesting codes and wait at least 24 hours before trying again; Microsoft notes that some blocks can take longer to clear.^4^
Microsoft Support cannot manually send a verification code or alter protected account details. If recovery still fails, use Contact Microsoft Support from the verification troubleshooting page.^4^
3. Install on the new computer after redemption
After the key is successfully linked:
- Go to https://m365.cloud.microsoft/apps.
- Sign in with the exact same Microsoft account used to redeem the card.
- Select Install apps and then Install.
- Run the downloaded installer.
- Open Word or another Microsoft 365 app and accept the licence agreement.
- If prompted to activate, sign in with that same account rather than entering the key again.^5^
If the purchase is not displayed after sign-in, the most likely account-side distinction to check is whether the key was redeemed under a different Microsoft account. Microsoft 365 normally uses the account associated with the purchase for installation and activation.^2^
If the redemption page reports that the key is already used, invalid, or intended for another region, retain the card and receipt and contact the retailer or Microsoft Support; do not purchase another subscription until the existing key’s status has been checked.
