A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
Try these steps in order:
- Restart Windows, sign in again, and open Excel.
- Run a full Office repair.
- In Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features
- Find Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365
- Select the More menu or three dots > Modify
- Choose Online Repair > Repair
- Restart the PC after it finishes
- Right-click Start > Apps and Features
- Select Microsoft Office or Microsoft 365 > Modify
- Choose Online Repair > Repair
- If Excel still fails, start Excel in safe mode to check whether an add-in or startup file is causing the problem.
- Press Windows + R
- Type
Excel /safe - Select OK
- Check for antivirus conflicts.
- Make sure antivirus software is fully up to date.
- If antivirus includes Excel integration or an Excel add-in, that can cause performance or startup problems.
- Changing antivirus settings can reduce protection, so use caution.
- If Excel hangs or freezes after opening a workbook, try changing calculation mode:
- Open Excel
- Go to Formulas
- Select Calculation Options
- Choose Manual
- If the error mentions something is blocked, check Excel Trust Center settings:
- Go to File > Options > Trust Center > Trust Center Settings
- For linked data types, under Security settings for linked data types, select either:
- Prompt user about linked data types, or
- Enable all linked data types (not recommended)
- If the workbook shows Enable Content on the trust bar, select it.
If Excel opens to a blank screen after double-clicking a file, Microsoft recommends an Online Repair first.
