If Windows Update shows no updates but the laptop still has update problems, start with the built-in troubleshooter.
For Windows 11:
- Open Start > Settings > System > Troubleshoot > Other troubleshooters.
- Find Windows Update and select Run.
- Follow the on-screen steps.
Then do these checks:
- Restart the laptop and check Windows Update again.
- Check free disk space. Low storage can block updates. Windows may need at least 16 GB free for 32-bit or 20 GB for 64-bit upgrades.
- If using a VPN, disable it and try again.
- Temporarily disable antivirus or firewall software if it may be blocking updates.
- If update files may be corrupted, open Command Prompt as Administrator and run:
sfc /scannow
If Windows Update is stuck or not refreshing properly, reset the update cache:
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Right-click Windows Update and select Stop.
- Go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution.
- Delete the files and folders inside it. This removes cached update files.
- Go back to Services, right-click Windows Update, and select Start.
- Check for updates again.
