winword /safeand press Enter. - If Word opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In Manage, select the add-in type and choose Go.
- Clear one add-in at a time, select OK, then restart Word normally.
- Older add-ins such as ABBYY FineReader and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause problems.
- Run an Office Online Repair
The Repair Now button in the error dialog is typically a quick repair. If that did nothing, run the full repair instead. Windows 11
- Right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select the three dots > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- Right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select it, then choose Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- Install Windows updates
Older device drivers can cause Office startup failures. Windows 11
- Select Start.
- Type settings.
- Select Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates.
- Install available updates.
- Select Start > Settings > Update & security > Windows Update.
- Select Check online for updates from Microsoft Update.
- Install available updates.
If Word does not open even in Safe Mode, the issue is not likely caused by add-ins, so the next step is Online Repair.
