Managing personal Outlook.com account settings, security, and privacy
If the original Microsoft account email now shows as nonexistent or was changed, the sign-in alias was likely changed by the attacker rather than the account being deleted.
Recommended steps:
- Use the hacked-account recovery flow first. Enter the original email address and follow the recovery options shown.
- If access is restored, immediately:
- Run a full malware scan on the PC before changing the password.
- Change or reset the password.
- Review account settings such as connected accounts, forwarding, and automatic replies.
- If the account is temporarily blocked, try signing in at
https://account.microsoft.comto unlock it. - If the account was locked and the Let’s prove you’re human option does not appear, use the aka.ms/ link shown in the sign-in window and submit the reinstatement form. After submission, wait for the Microsoft Online Safety support agent to review it and respond by email. Do not submit multiple requests.
- If account creation is blocked after trying to recreate the same email, stop repeated sign-up attempts for at least 24 hours. Repeated registrations can keep triggering the restriction.
- If self-help does not resolve it, use the Microsoft sign-in helper. It can guide to the correct recovery path and may offer the chance to talk to an agent.
Important:
- If the account was hacked, run the antivirus full scan before changing the password.
- If Outlook.com mailbox or OneDrive storage is full, email sending and receiving can also be affected.
- Support agents can only send password reset links or change account details through the account reinstatement process.
