If the device was accidentally enrolled and preview updates are now failing, whether a full reinstall is needed depends on the channel and whether Go back is still available.
- Check for a rollback option first.
Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
- If Go back to the previous version of Windows 11 is available, use it. This is the least disruptive path.
- The rollback option is generally available for up to 10 days after installing the update.
- If rollback is not available, stop preview builds in Settings.
Go to Settings > Windows Update > Windows Insider Program > Stop Insider Preview Builds.
- For Beta, Experimental, or Release Preview, turning this on stops preview builds and returns the device to a retail build.
- If the device is on Experimental (Future Platforms), a clean installation of Windows 11 is required.
- If updates are failing, try getting current first. Go to Settings > Windows Update and select Check for updates. Expiring or outdated Insider builds can stop receiving updates and may require either moving to the latest build in the current channel or reinstalling Windows.
- If the device is stuck and cannot update, use recovery options.
Go to Settings > System > Recovery.
Available supported options are:
- Reset this PC to reinstall Windows on the same build currently installed.
- Go back to the previous build, if still available.
- Clean install Windows or another Insider build using an ISO.
- Back up files before reset, rollback, or clean install. These actions can risk data loss, especially a clean installation.
- If the issue continues, file feedback. Use Feedback Hub with logs and screenshots, then share the feedback link through the Windows Insider support channels listed in the troubleshooting guidance.
A complete reinstallation is not always required. It is required when:
- the device is on Experimental (Future Platforms), or
- the device is stuck on an outdated/expiring Insider build and cannot move forward through Windows Update.
