When I sign on on the morning my computer is very slow. I see multiple Microsoft Ede and many outlooks so it takes along time to speed up. Is there anything I can do to help that?

    Hi @Tom Duncan

First, please feel free to check out the AI answer

    Could you confirm the following?

    1. Are you using new Outlook for Windows, classic Outlook, or Outlook in the Edge browser?
    2. Do Edge and Outlook open automatically when you sign in, even if you did not leave them open before shutting down?
    3. In Task Manager, which resource is unusually high: CPU, Memory, or Disk?
    4. Approximately how long does the computer remain slow, and does performance return to normal afterward?
    5. Which version of Windows are you using, and how much RAM is installed?
    6. Does the same issue occur after selecting Restart, rather than shutting down and turning the computer back on?

If possible, please also share a screenshot of Task Manager sorted by the resource showing the highest usage.

    Thank you for your time

Yes. The most likely cause is that Edge and Outlook are starting with Windows or continuing to run in the background, which can slow startup.

    Try these steps:

    1. Disable Edge from startup apps.
      • Open Task Manager.
      • Go to the Startup tab.
      • If Microsoft Edge appears there, right-click it and select Disable.
    2. Stop Edge from running in the background.
      • Open Edge.
      • Go to Settings > System and performance.
      • Turn off Continue running background apps when Microsoft Edge is closed.
    3. Check whether Outlook add-ins are contributing to the slowdown.
      • Start Outlook in Safe mode by pressing and holding Ctrl while starting Outlook.
      • If Outlook is faster in Safe mode, disable add-ins:
        • In Outlook, select File > Options > Add-ins.
        • In Manage, select COM Add-ins, then select Go.
        • Clear add-ins that are not regularly used.
        • Restart Outlook.
    4. Reduce general startup load.
      • In Task Manager or System Configuration, disable unnecessary startup items.
      • A clean boot can help identify whether another app is causing the heavy startup load.
    5. Check for general system causes of slow performance.
      • Close other programs that are using memory and CPU.
      • Make sure antivirus protection is running.
      • Spyware, viruses, browser add-ons, low memory, and low disk space can all slow the computer and internet performance.
    6. If many Edge processes are still visible, that can be normal.
      • Edge can show multiple processes because modern apps use separate sub-processes.
      • The main issue is whether Edge is launching automatically or staying active in the background.

If the slowdown improves after disabling startup/background behavior, that confirms the cause was startup loading rather than normal multi-process behavior.
