Surface Pro 11: Display driver update (31.0.137.0) causes Code 43 on Qualcomm Adreno X1-85 GPU

Hi,

I am experiencing a persistent graphics driver issue on my Surface Pro 11 (Snapdragon X Elite/Plus).

Issue Description:

  • Updating the GPU driver to the latest official version (31.0.137.0, dated Aug 2026) via the official Surface MSI driver package results in a Code 43 error in Device Manager ("Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems.").

The issue persists even after performing a full driver cleanup and re-installing the latest official Surface update MSI package.

Current Status & Workaround:

Reverting to the older 2024 OEM driver version (31.0.38.6) resolves the Code 43 error immediately and restores normal display functions.

However, under heavier display/system loads, version 31.0.38.6 occasionally triggers DPC_WATCHDOG_VIOLATION (0x133) bugchecks. Minidump analysis points toward dxgkrnl.sys / GPU DPC timeouts.

Questions:

Is there a known software/firmware compatibility issue with driver 31.0.137.0 on certain Surface Pro 11 revisions?

Is there an intermediate driver release recommended for this setup to avoid both Code 43 and DPC watchdog crashes?

Any guidance or technical insights would be greatly appreciated!

    Hi Ori Oz,

Thanks for providing such a detailed explanation and for testing both driver versions. Since version 31.0.137.0 consistently causes Code 43 even after a clean reinstall, while 31.0.38.6 restores the GPU, the issue appears to be related to the newer driver or how it interacts with the device’s current firmware and Windows build.

I’m not aware of any confirmed reports that driver 31.0.137.0 is incompatible with certain Surface Pro 11 revisions, and there doesn’t appear to be a recommended intermediate version at this point. For safety, I’d stick with drivers released specifically for your exact Surface model.

Could you confirm your current Windows version and OS build, whether your device uses the Snapdragon X Elite or X Plus processor, the full filename of the driver MSI package you installed and the current UEFI version shown in the Surface app? It would also help to know whether Code 43 appears immediately after restarting and whether you’re using an external monitor, dock or USB-C display adapter.

I wouldn’t recommend installing a graphics driver intended for a different Snapdragon device. For now, you may need to remain on version 31.0.38.6 if it is the only version that keeps the GPU working, but since that version is also causing occasional 0x133 crashes, I’d treat it only as a temporary workaround.

Besides, I’d suggest reporting the issue through Feedback Hub under Devices and Drivers > Display and Graphics, including both driver versions, the Code 43 details and any available minidump information. If the crashes continue, contacting Surface support would be the most suitable next step so they can review the firmware version, hardware IDs and dump files together as a possible driver or firmware compatibility issue.
