Hi, I am using an Azure Free Trial subscription and I am unable to create a Virtual Machine.

When I try to create a VM, I receive the following error:

NotAvailableForSubscription

I have tried multiple VM sizes and multiple Azure regions, including:

  • Central India
  • East US
  • West Europe
  • Southeast Asia

The same issue occurs across different VM sizes, including Standard_D2s_v3, Standard_D2s_v5, Standard_D2s_v6, and other small VM sizes.

Regards,

NotAvailableForSubscription means the VM size is not available for that subscription in the selected region or availability zone.

For an Azure Free Trial subscription, this commonly happens because:

    1. The selected VM SKU is restricted for the subscription.
    2. The region does not currently have capacity for that VM size.
    3. Some older or high-demand VM series have capacity restrictions.

    Actionable checks:

    1. In Azure portal, start creating a VM and go to Size.
    2. Select See all sizes.
    3. Filter the list and use only sizes that appear as available there for the chosen region. That view shows the SKUs available to the current subscription without needing to complete deployment.
    4. If using PowerShell, check available compute SKUs for a region:
         Get-AzComputeResourceSku | Where-Object { $_.Locations -contains "centralus" }

SKUs that are unavailable for the current subscription are listed as NotAvailableForSubscription.
    5. If availability zones are being used, verify zone-specific availability because a size can be unavailable in a specific zone even when the region supports it.

For the VM sizes already tried:

    • If the portal or SKU query shows NotAvailableForSubscription, that size cannot be deployed in that region for the current subscription.
    • If deployment errors show SkuNotAvailable, choose another size or deploy to a different location or zones.
    • If deployment errors show AllocationFailed or ZonalAllocationFailed, the region or zone does not currently have sufficient capacity for that VM size.

    Practical next steps:

    1. Stop retrying the same blocked size/region combinations.
    2. In the portal, pick a region first, then select a VM size only from See all sizes.
    3. Prefer alternative VM sizes suggested by Azure when shown during deployment.
    4. Try a different region or a different VM size if the requested one is unavailable.
    5. If an availability set is involved, choose a size supported on that availability set’s cluster.
