System & reserved can be large, especially after Windows updates, because it can include update files, temporary system files, restore-related data, reserved storage, and files kept for uninstalling an update for about 10 days.
A practical way to work through this on a Surface Pro 7 is:
- Open Settings > System > Storage.
- Select Show more categories to review what is included.
- Open Cleanup recommendations.
- Review these sections carefully:
- Temporary files
- Large or unused files
- Files synced to the cloud
- Unused apps
- Select items to remove, then select Clean up for each section.
If Storage Sense is not already on:
- Go to Start > Settings > System > Storage.
- Turn on Storage Sense.
- Run Cleanup recommendations again.
If the device was updated recently, one common reason for high system storage is the previous Windows version being kept temporarily. If it appears in Cleanup recommendations or Disk Cleanup as a previous Windows installation, it can be deleted to free space.
Important: deleting a previous Windows version removes the ability to roll back to that earlier version, and this cannot be undone.
If more cleanup is needed, use Disk Cleanup:
- Type disk cleanup in the taskbar search box and open it.
- Select the Windows drive and choose OK.
- Select file types to remove.
- Select Clean up system files for additional removable system files.
- Confirm with OK and Delete files.
Important: if the previous Windows version appears there, deleting it also removes the rollback option.
If Windows update is failing because of space, Windows may need extra storage temporarily to download the update, install optional features or languages already present, and keep removal files for about 10 days after the update.
If the storage still looks unusually high after using Cleanup recommendations, Storage Sense, and Disk Cleanup, support for Surface is available through the Surface app, Get Help, or the Surface support site.
