Battery Drains to 0% After Shutdown

Hello,

I am experiencing a battery issue with my Windows laptop.

When I shut down my laptop while it is unplugged, the next time I try to start it, the battery is sometimes at 0–1%, even though it had enough charge before shutdown. Sometimes the laptop also does not start until I connect the charger.

However, if I leave the laptop plugged in, I do not experience this problem.

It seems that the battery may still be draining even after Windows has been shut down.

Could you please advise what could be causing this? Could it be related to Fast Startup, Modern Standby, power settings, drivers/BIOS, or the battery itself?

Thank you for your help.

    1

Click your Start Button, then just type cmd and on the resulting list, right click Command Prompt and select 'Run as Administrator'

Paste this into Command Prompt and press Enter

    reg add HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Control\Power /v PlatformAoAcOverride /t REG_DWORD /d 0

When that command completes, close Command prompt and restart (not shut down) your PC to apply that change.

Wait to test if that resolves the problem.

    2

If that does not resolve the problem.

Click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

Possible causes supported by the available guidance are:

    1. The PC may not be fully shutting down and could still be entering a low-power state that continues to draw some battery.
    2. USB devices or other peripherals can continue drawing power after shutdown.
    3. Firmware, BIOS, or Windows updates can matter for battery-related behavior.
    4. Battery aging or reduced capacity can make the battery drop faster than expected.
    5. If the device later shows symptoms such as turning off as soon as it is unplugged, battery not detected, or plugged in, not charging, that can indicate a battery or power hardware issue.

    Actionable checks:

    1. Confirm the device is actually shutting down Make sure the laptop is being shut down from Start > Power > Shut down rather than entering sleep through lid close or a brief power-button press.
    2. Shut down with accessories disconnected Unplug USB devices, docks, and other peripherals, then shut down and test again. Accessories can increase power draw.
    3. Check for updates Install available Windows Update updates. If the device manufacturer provides firmware/BIOS updates, apply those as well.
    4. Generate a battery report Open an elevated Command Prompt and run:
         powercfg.exe /batteryreport /output c:\reports\batterylife.html

This report shows battery usage history, recent drain behavior, and changes in charge capacity.
    5. If the PC supports Modern Standby, generate a SleepStudy report In an elevated Command Prompt, run:
         powercfg /sleepstudy

This can help identify battery drain during Modern Standby. It is available only on CS-enabled PCs.
    6. Check battery health and capacity expectations Lithium-ion batteries lose capacity over time. Reduced capacity means the battery holds less charge and may need charging more often.
    7. Watch for hardware-failure symptoms If the laptop only starts when connected to power, shuts off immediately when unplugged, or the battery is not detected, that points more strongly to a failing battery or power hardware problem.

A small battery drop after shutdown can happen, but repeated drops to 0–1% after the system was previously charged are more consistent with either:

    • the device not fully powering off, or
    • a battery/power hardware problem.
