A family of Microsoft spreadsheet software with tools for analyzing, charting, and communicating data.
If Excel says a workbook is corrupted or needs repair, use Open and Repair for each affected file:
- Open Excel.
- Select File > Open.
- Go to the folder that contains the workbook.
- In the Open dialog, select the damaged workbook.
- Select the arrow next to Open.
- Choose Open and Repair.
- Select:
- Repair to recover as much of the workbook as possible.
- Extract Data if Repair does not work, to recover values and formulas.
If Excel cannot open the file because of a disk or network error, move the workbook to a local drive first and then try Open and Repair again.
If Excel itself is also behaving incorrectly across many files, repair the Office installation:
- Close all Office apps.
- In Windows, open Settings.
- Go to Apps > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select Modify.
- Choose:
- Quick Repair first.
- Online Repair if the problem continues. This is more thorough.
- Complete the repair and restart the computer if prompted.
To help prevent future workbook corruption:
- Turn on Always create backup: File > Save As > Browse > arrow next to Tools > General Options > Always create backup.
- Turn on AutoRecover: File > Options > Save > check Save AutoRecover information every and confirm Disable AutoRecover for this workbook only is not selected.
