Hi,

I am not sure if this has happened to others before but several teachers have reported that suddenly their students were able to see each other's notebooks in the class notebook and they could also see the teacher only area. We've check they are not owners in the Team, nor owners in the Class Notebook or the associated Sharepoint, so not sure why this has happened. Any suggestions as to why this has happened and how to sort it out?

Many thanks,

Valerie

    Dear Valerie,

That's understandably concerning, especially when the Teacher-Only area is affected. As a forum moderator, I genuinely wish I could directly review your notebooks or their permissions to diagnose and fix this directly. Unfortunately, my role here is limited to providing general guidance and solutions that can be applied by users.

Since several teachers reported this at once, please ask your school's IT administrator to check whether any students were made owners recently, even temporarily, for example through a sync tool or a bulk membership change. They can also check whether any of the notebooks were shared directly in OneNote or SharePoint.

If students can still see each other's sections or the Teacher-Only area after these checks, I recommend that your school's IT admin open a service request with Microsoft. A technical support engineer can perform a remote session to investigate the situation, verify the backend configurations, and run any necessary synchronization tools to resolve the problem. If the issue requires further attention, they can escalate it to a specialized team for deeper analysis. For detailed instructions on how to get support, please refer to Get support - Microsoft 365 admin. If you don't know who your IT administrator is, please refer to this article: How do I find my Microsoft 365 admin? - Microsoft Support

I hope this helps. Looking forward to your reply.

We have checked and done was has been suggested but the students can still see each other's notebooks. Is there a glitch reported? and is there something we can do to fix this?

This usually happens when a student’s role was changed from member to owner in Microsoft Teams. In that state, the student gains administrative access to all Class Notebook sections, which can let them see other students’ private notebooks.

    What to check and do:

    1. In the class team in Microsoft Teams, verify each affected student is a member, not an owner.
    2. If any student was previously changed to owner, change that student back to member.
    3. After the role is changed back, the student’s access to other students’ notebooks is removed and a new private space is created for that student.
    4. The student will still keep access to the Collaboration Space and Content Library.

    Important points:

    • Class Notebooks created in Microsoft Teams inherit permissions from the class team.
    • Changing student permissions in the class team is not recommended because it can affect notebook access.
    • If teachers or owners shared the notebook by using the Share feature in OneNote for the web or other OneNote apps, that can also cause permission issues. That sharing method only grants access to the Welcome page and is not the recommended way to manage Class Notebook access.
    • For correct membership management, add students and educators through the Class Notebook membership tools instead of ad hoc sharing.

If the issue is specifically that people lost access to the Content Library, the notebook owner can go to the fix OneNote page and select Fix Permissions for the affected notebook. When it shows Permissions Fixed, access should be restored.
