I keep getting this from Copilot when I ask for help with an excel file that is located on my desktop and has the .xlsx format: " but the workbook-processing tools are temporarily returning an error before I can modify the file."

That error can occur because the workbook is stored in a local path. For Microsoft Copilot file access, local paths are not supported for uploaded or cloud-hosted file workflows, and moving the file to OneDrive or SharePoint is a supported troubleshooting step.

    Try this:

    1. Open the workbook in Excel.
    2. Select File > Save As.
    3. Save the file to OneDrive or SharePoint instead of the Desktop.
    4. Reopen the cloud-saved copy.
    5. Try Copilot again.

    Also check these file conditions:

    • Make sure the workbook is a modern Excel format such as .xlsx.
    • If the file came from an older or different format, save it again as Excel Workbook (.xlsx).
    • If the file is checked out in SharePoint, check it back in, then close and reopen it.
    • If a SharePoint site requires check-out for editing, use Excel for the web for those files.

If the file is in a third-party storage location, move or copy it to OneDrive or SharePoint before using Copilot with that file.

    Hi Stephanie Heimbuch,

I understand how disruptive this is when Copilot can open the workbook context but stops just before making the requested changes.

The message about the “workbook-processing tools” may indicate a temporary processing issue rather than a problem with the .xlsx format alone. Since local modern Excel workbooks may be supported in recent versions of Excel, could you please check the following?

    • In Excel, go to File > Account > About Excel and share the version and build number shown there.
    • On the Formulas tab, open Calculation Options and make sure it is set to Automatic.
    • Create a new blank .xlsx workbook and ask Copilot to make one simple change, such as adding column headers. This will help determine whether the error is limited to the original workbook.
    • Please also let us know whether you are using Copilot directly inside Excel, the Microsoft 365 Copilot app, or Copilot in a browser.

If Copilot can answer questions about the workbook but fails only when asked to edit it, please mention that as well, as it would help distinguish an Edit mode issue from general file access.

Please note that Microsoft Q&A is a user-to-user support forum, so I cannot access account-specific service logs or the Copilot back end. If the same error occurs with a new workbook after Excel is fully updated, you can report it using the thumbs-down icon in the Copilot pane and include the exact error message and Excel build number.

You may also refer to Get started with Copilot in Excel and Frequently asked questions about Copilot in Excel. Thank you so much for your understanding.
