For Microsoft 365 apps on a Mac, the download method depends on how the apps were installed:
- If the apps were installed from the Mac App Store:
- Open Mac App Store.
- Select Updates.
- Select Update All or Update next to the specific Microsoft 365 apps.
- If the apps were installed from microsoft.com:
- Open a Microsoft 365 app such as Word.
- Select Help > Check for Updates.
- In Microsoft AutoUpdate, select Update to download and install available updates.
- To keep apps current automatically, select Automatically keep Microsoft apps up to date.
- If it is unclear how the apps were installed, run this command in Terminal:
mdls -name kMDItemAppStoreReceiptType /Applications/Microsoft\ Word.app- If the result is MDItemAppStoreReceiptType = (null), use Microsoft AutoUpdate.
- If the app shows a receipt type of Production, use the Mac App Store.
For organizations managing Office for Mac centrally, admins can either:
- Let Microsoft AutoUpdate download updates automatically and let users install them.
- Manually download updates to the local network and deploy them with software distribution tools.
If using software distribution tools for Office on Mac, Microsoft recommends setting Microsoft AutoUpdate to manual checking:
defaults write com.microsoft.autoupdate2 HowToCheck -string 'Manual'
For Teams specifically, if the Teams update prompt keeps failing, one documented path is to clear the Teams cache and manually update, or uninstall Teams from Start > Settings > Apps, then reinstall it from the Teams download page.
- Update Office for Mac automatically
- Deploy updates for Office for Mac
- MS Teams update - Microsoft Q&A Each day I open my laptop, I get a full-screen reminder: 'UPDATE TEAMS.' I click on the provided link, it downloads a folder -- I click on that (once scanned for issues) -- and then the downloaded system set-up document never functions. Instead, it just flips me back to the original full-screen page w/ 'Update' link. WHASSUP????
