A Microsoft app for iOS and Android devices that enables authentication with two-factor verification, phone sign-in, and code generation
For a personal Microsoft account, the phone number on file cannot simply be changed by someone else to a personal email address through support. Support agents are not allowed to access and change account details.
If access to the account is still available:
- Go to Security at https://account.microsoft.com/security.
- Select Manage how I sign in.
- Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
- Add a recovery email, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey.
If the goal is to change the email address associated with the Microsoft account:
- Go to Manage how you sign in to Microsoft at https://account.live.com/names/manage.
- Select Add email.
- Verify the new email.
- Optionally make it the primary alias.
Important details:
- For personal Microsoft accounts, adding a new phone number may not be available. Available options may be a recovery email address, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey.
- If access to the old phone number is lost, recovery can still be possible with a verified email and passkey.
- If sign-in is no longer possible, use the Sign-in Helper.
- If no verification method is available, select I don't have any of these during sign-in and follow the prompts.
