Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
For Outlook.com, check these common causes in this order:
- Check mailbox storage first. If Microsoft cloud storage is full, email cannot be sent or received, and messages sent during that time can bounce back to the sender and are unrecoverable.
- Sign in to Outlook.com in a browser and check:
- Junk Email folder
- Other tab
- Deleted Items, Archive, and any custom folders
- Filter > Sort > Date to make sure messages are not just appearing out of order
- Check Outlook.com settings for anything redirecting mail:
- Email forwarding enabled
- Mail rules that move or hide messages
- Junk Email settings and blocked senders
- If only certain messages are missing, ask the sender whether they received a non-delivery report. If there is no visible error, the sender can review Outlook.com sender guidance.
- If the password was changed recently, update it. If the account was temporarily blocked because of unusual sign-in activity, unblock the Outlook.com account.
- If sign-in is also failing, use the Microsoft account sign-in helper.
- If mail appears in Outlook on the web but not in an email app, the mailbox is working and the issue is likely with the app or device.
If the issue continues after these checks, use the Outlook.com interactive troubleshooter.
