If the Brightness slider in the system tray area and also in the Settings App - System - Display section is not working to change the brightness on your screen, that usually indicates there is a problem with the Graphics drivers.

The best option is to go to the support page for your PC on the manufacturers website to download and reinstall the version of graphics drivers they provide for your PC model.

If you have any difficulty locating that support page, click your Start Button, then just type msinfo and press Enter, please provide a screenshot of the resulting System Information window.

If the built-in display brightness slider is present but does nothing, use these steps:

    1. Try the standard brightness controls again from:
      • Taskbar quick settings: select the Network icon on the right side of the taskbar, then move the Brightness slider.
      • Settings: Start > Settings > System > Display.
    2. If the slider still does not change the screen brightness, update the display driver:
      • Type Device Manager in the taskbar search box and open it.
      • Expand Display adapters.
      • Right-click the display adapter.
      • Select Update driver and follow the prompts.
    3. If the device is using automatic brightness, check whether it is affecting behavior:
      • Go to Start > Settings > System > Display.
      • Under Brightness, check whether brightness automatically when lighting changes is enabled.
      • If available, adjust it as needed.
    4. On some Windows 11 devices, content-based brightness changes can also affect how dim the screen appears:
      • Go to Settings > System > Display > Brightness.
      • Check Change brightness based on content and set it to Off, Always, or On Battery Only as needed.
    5. If the device has HDR and brightness changes seem inconsistent, manually changing brightness in Settings > System > Display can restore the correct level after certain power-state changes.
    6. If the device recently stopped responding to automatic brightness after a reboot on Windows 11 24H2 or 25H2, a temporary workaround is to trigger a brightness-related action such as:
      • adjusting the brightness slider manually
      • pressing a brightness hotkey
      • plugging in or unplugging power
      • turning Battery Saver on or off
      • putting the device to sleep while on battery power

If the display is actually an external monitor, Windows might not control its brightness. In that case, use the monitor’s physical buttons instead.
