Modern x86-64 (x64) systems equipped with high-performance processors (like AMD Ryzen H/HX and Intel Core series) and high-speed PCIe NVMe SSDs are still constrained by a legacy, single-slot in-place updating architecture. We strongly urge Microsoft to modernize the Windows 11 update mechanism for both x64 and ARM platforms with the following architectural improvements:
A/B Seamless Partitioning (Zero-Downtime Updates):
Implement dual-slot (A/B) seamless updates similar to modern Android and mobile architectures. The OS should stage and patch cumulative updates to the inactive slot entirely in the background while the user continues working. On reboot, the bootloader should immediately switch execution to the updated slot, reducing offline installation downtime from several minutes to just a few seconds, with instant fallback safety against boot failures.
Strict 20 GB Core OS Footprint Cap:
Containerize the baseline system files into a compressed, read-only system image capped at ~20 GB. Essential system binaries should be isolated from user modifications and transient application data to prevent system bloat over time.
Automated Post-Update Pruning (No WinSxS Accumulation):
Eliminate lingering setup caches, delivery optimization residue, and outdated component rollbacks automatically. Once the new slot boots and verifies system integrity, previous update artifacts should be purged immediately without requiring manual cleanmgr or Storage Sense cleanup.
