I am having difficulty with login due to a now closed, email set for login verification. I see the REMOVE tab but want to be sure I have a new verification contact available.

Hello,

Make sure you add a new recovery email address before deleting the older one.

Go to the 'Security Settings page' of your Microsoft Account here: https://account.live.com/proofs/Manage

Select 'Add another way to sign in to your account'.

Add a new recovery email address or set up Authenticator to verify your identity.

You can then remove the Closed email address from the security settings page of your Microsoft account.

(This is how the page looks. Make sure you are also on the same page where you remove your closed email address)

Yes—add the new verification method first, then remove the closed one.

    For a personal Microsoft account:

    1. Go to the Microsoft account Security page and sign in.
    2. Select Manage how I sign in.
    3. Select Add a new way to sign in or verify.
    4. Add the new method you can access, such as a recovery email, Microsoft Authenticator, or a passkey.
    5. Enter the security code sent to that new method, then select Next.
    6. After the new method appears in the list, go to Advanced security options.
    7. Expand the old verification method and select Remove, then select Remove again to confirm.

    Important:

    • Microsoft recommends not removing old security info unless there is a security risk.
    • If replacing security info, add the new information first.
    • If all security information is removed, the account enters a restricted state for 30 days. During that period, no further changes or additions to security settings or billing information can be made.
    • Verification codes sent by email can only go to the primary alias or another email already added as a sign-in verification method.

If the closed email is the only verification method and access to any existing method is no longer possible, use the sign-in flow and choose the option such as I don't have any of these to replace the security information. Replacing all previous security info triggers the 30-day restricted period.
