0xE0000796 Onenote cannot sync because I'm "Out of cloud storage"

Onenote is saying that it can't sync my notebooks because I'm out of cloud storage, but my account uses < 0.1% of the available free storage.

And now it is basically unusable any longer.

I'm wondering what can i do to fix this.

Has anyone had this issue before?
I need to mention that OneNote for MacOS lists zero notebooks (as if i have none) and OneNote for web - although it lists my notebooks - doesn't allow me to make any changes to the notebooks due to the cloud storage error.

0xE0000796 means OneNote believes the notebook cannot sync because of a storage limit condition. For notebooks stored in OneDrive, OneNote also has a 2 GB per-notebook file size limit, so this error can appear even when the overall account storage is mostly empty.

Given the symptoms described — OneNote for Mac showing no notebooks, and OneNote for the web listing notebooks but blocking edits — use this order:

    1. Check the notebook size itself
      • Verify whether the affected notebook is larger than 2 GB.
      • If it is, OneNote will not sync that notebook even if the account still has plenty of free storage.
    2. Confirm the storage location and available cloud storage
      • If the notebook is stored on OneDrive or SharePoint, check the remaining storage on the OneDrive website.
      • If the account storage is clearly available, the issue is likely not total account quota but either the notebook size limit or a sync/state problem.
    3. Test the notebook in OneNote for the web
      • Open the notebook in OneNote for the web.
      • If it opens there, that helps determine whether the issue is with the Mac client connection.
      • If it does not allow normal access there either, the problem is more likely with the notebook storage state or the service-side notebook state.
    4. On Mac, refresh the notebook connection
      • In OneNote for Mac, select Notebooks > Notebooks > Copy Link to Notebook.
      • Paste that link into a browser and open it in OneNote for the web.
      • If the notebook opens successfully in the browser, return to OneNote for Mac and close/reopen the notebook:
        • Notebooks > Notebooks > Close This Notebook
        • In OneNote for the web, select Open in OneNote
      • This often resets the Mac sync connection.
    5. If the notebook is on OneDrive, check service status
      • If the notebook cannot be opened properly in OneNote for the web, check the Microsoft service status for OneDrive interruptions.
    6. If local disk space is low, clear old local cache files
      • Microsoft notes that this error can also appear if the computer is low on disk space because cloud notebooks are cached locally.
      • On Windows, the documented step is to remove old files from the OneNote cache. The Mac-specific cache-clearing path is not provided in the documentation here, so only the supported fact is that local disk space can also trigger this error.
    7. If the issue continues, use support/admin escalation
      • For personal Microsoft accounts, use Contact Microsoft Support.
      • For work or school notebooks stored in SharePoint or organizational storage, contact the SharePoint or IT administrator.

Important: Microsoft warns that while troubleshooting sync issues, signing out, removing accounts, or reinstalling OneNote is not recommended, because unsynced notes can be lost.
