New laptop, syncing phone took up almost all memory

I just got a new laptop and thought I would try out syncing my phone to see if there was benefit. After doing that, I noticed it almost took up the entire memory of the new laptop. Now I want to unsync the phone and delete all that came with it to free up the memory. How do I do that?

To remove the phone-synced files from the laptop without deleting the originals on the phone, do this in order:

    1. Open Settings on the PC.
    2. Go to Bluetooth & devices > Mobile devices > Manage devices.
    3. Turn off Show mobile device in File Explorer.
    4. Open File Explorer and go to: C:\Users\<your username>\CrossDevice
    5. Delete the files or folders there that were copied from the phone.

That removes the local copies on the PC and does not affect the files on the phone.

If the phone is still linked and there are ongoing sync issues, reset the connection:

    1. On the PC, go to Start > Settings > Bluetooth & devices.
    2. Select Phone Link from the list.
    3. Toggle Phone Link off and back on.
    4. Reopen Phone Link.

If that is not enough, fully reset the link:

    1. On the Android device, go to Settings > Apps > Link to Windows.
    2. Tap Force Stop.
    3. On the PC, open Start > Settings > Phone > Unlink this PC.
    4. Then go to Settings > Apps > Apps & features > Phone Link > Advanced options > Reset.

If the goal is only to stop future syncing, Phone Link also lets features be turned off individually in Phone Link > Settings > Features.

    Hi Laura Phelan,

It sounds like the phone connection may have made a large number of files available on your laptop, which can quickly reduce available storage on a new device.

As an alternative check, you can use Storage settings to identify exactly where the space is being used:

    1. Open Settings > System > Storage.
    2. Review the categories using the most space, especially Pictures, Documents, or Other.
    3. If you find a large folder related to your phone content, you can remove those local copies after confirming they are not files you need on the PC.

If you no longer plan to use phone integration, you can also disconnect the device from Phone Link (further steps in AI answer) and monitor your available storage afterward to confirm the space usage does not return.

I hope this helps point you to the files consuming the storage. If you're unsure which folder has grown significantly, feel free to share a screenshot of the Storage breakdown (without personal information), and the community can help identify what is safe to remove.
