For Office 2021 on two home PCs, upgrading to a newer version requires buying the latest version of Office or a Microsoft 365 subscription. Office 2021 is a one-time purchase version, so it does not upgrade in place to a newer perpetual version automatically.
Recommended path:
- Check that each computer meets the minimum system requirements for the newer Office version.
- Buy the newer Office version or a Microsoft 365 subscription.
- Install the new product on each PC.
- In most cases, running Office Setup on a PC that already has an earlier version of Office removes the earlier version automatically.
- If installation errors occur, uninstall the older Office version first. This does not delete Office files, but if Outlook is included, back up Outlook data files before uninstalling.
- Avoid running multiple Office versions on the same PC unless specifically needed and supported.
- After installation, Office should update automatically, or updates can be checked manually.
If Office 2021 is managed by a work or school IT department, contact the IT Help Desk for the upgrade plan.
To reinstall or install a purchased Office version, sign in to the Microsoft account associated with Office, go to the Microsoft account dashboard, select Office apps, find the Office product, and select Install. The language and 64-bit option can be chosen from the dropdown before installing.
