Use this order:
- Update Office first
- Open any Office app if possible.
- Go to File > Account.
- Under Product Information, select Update Options > Update Now.
- If Update Now is not shown, select Enable Updates first.
- Start the app in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Press Windows + R.
- For Word, type
winword /safeand press Enter. - If Word opens in Safe Mode, go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In Manage, select the add-in type, choose Go, clear the add-ins, and restart normally.
- The same approach applies to other Office apps.

- Right-click Start > Installed apps.
- Find Microsoft 365 or Office.
- Select the three dots > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- Right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair > Repair.
- This repairs the entire Office suite, even if only Word or Excel is failing.
- Online Repair is more thorough than Quick Repair.
- Restart the PC after the repair finishes.
- If Office says it is busy or still will not open
- Wait a few minutes and try again.
- Restart the computer.
- If the problem continues, use the Office uninstall troubleshooter to completely remove Office, then reinstall it.
- If Office files open in the wrong app or do not open by double-clicking
- Run a Quick Repair from Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features > select Office > Change > Quick Repair.
- If needed, manually set the correct default app in Control Panel > Programs > Default Programs.
If the original message first showed unlicensed, and now all Office apps fail with the error, the most direct fix from the documented steps is Online Repair.
