A family of Microsoft word processing software products for creating web, email, and print documents.
Use this order:
- Update Office and Windows first
- Install the latest Windows updates.
- If any Office app opens, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
- Restart the PC after updates.
- Start Word in Safe Mode to check add-ins
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
winword /safeand press Enter. - Confirm the title bar shows Word (Safe Mode).
- If Word opens in Safe Mode:
- Go to File > Options > Add-Ins.
- In Manage, select the add-in type and click Go.
- Clear one add-in at a time, click OK, then restart Word normally.
- Older add-ins such as Abbyy FineReader, PowerWord, and Dragon Naturally Speaking are known to cause problems.
- If Word does not open in Safe Mode, the issue is likely not an add-in.
- Run an Office repair
- In Windows 11: Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps.
- In Windows 10: right-click Start > Apps and Features.
- Select Microsoft 365 or Office > Modify.
- Choose Online Repair and then Repair.
- This is more thorough than Quick Repair.
- Restart the PC when finished.
- If Word still fails, update device drivers
- Install the latest drivers for the PC, especially video card, printer, mouse, and keyboard drivers.
- Advanced Word-only reset
- Warning: editing the registry can cause serious problems if done incorrectly, and Word settings may be reset.
- Close all Office apps.
- Open regedit.
- Back up and then delete this key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Data

- Start Word again.
- If that does not help, back up and then delete:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Office\16.0\Word\Options

If the error appears only when opening one specific file, try:
- File > Open > Browse
- Select the file
- Click the arrow next to Open
- Choose Open and Repair
