Sending, receiving, and organizing email in Outlook.com
For an Outlook.com personal account where the wrong name appears only when addressing a message to the same account, the most likely cause is a bad suggested-recipient entry rather than the account’s actual display name.
Try this in Outlook.com:
- Go to Settings > General > Privacy and data.
- Under Suggested people, select Clear data and turn off.
- Wait up to 24 hours.
- Return to the same setting and turn it back on if needed.
Also check for mailbox settings that could cause odd address behavior:
- In Outlook on the web, open Settings > Mail > Rules and remove anything not created intentionally.
- Check Forwarding and confirm it is not enabled unless expected.
If the issue is only the name suggestion while composing to the same address, and not the actual sender name recipients see, this aligns with a corrupted suggested-name entry.
If the problem is instead the name recipients see on sent mail in classic Outlook, that is a different setting:
- In classic Outlook for Windows, go to File > Account Settings > Account Settings.
- Select the account and choose Change.
- Update the Your name field.
For Outlook.com personal-account suggestion issues, clearing Suggested people is the relevant fix when deleting the entry manually does not persist.
