If the device has a supported camera, the simplest built-in option is the Windows Camera app:
- Open the Camera app.
- Select Document on the right side.
- If Document is not available, the camera does not support document scanning.
- Place the paper in view and keep it in focus.
- When the blue box appears around the document, select Take document.
- The scan appears as a thumbnail in the Camera roll at the bottom right.
- Select the thumbnail to review it.
- If needed, use the editing tools:
- Crop to trim the page
- Rotate to fix orientation
- Zoom to inspect it
- Select the ellipsis (...) in the top-right corner, then choose:
- Open Folder to find where it was saved on the laptop
- Export to print it or save it as a PDF
- Copy to copy it to the clipboard
If using a printer or scanner instead of the Camera app, the scan process depends on the device model. The manufacturer usually provides the driver and scanning software needed to scan directly to the computer.
If the goal is to put the scanned file into Word:
- For an image: save it as .JPG, .PNG, or .GIF, then in Word go to Insert > Pictures > This device and select the file.
- For editable text: scan the document as a PDF, then in Word go to File > Open, open the PDF, and select OK when Word offers to convert it into an editable document.
Notes:
- Word conversion works best for documents that are mostly typed text.
- Handwritten text is seldom recognized accurately.
- The converted Word document may not match the original page layout exactly.
