I'm not able to save a new PowerPoint presentation. The messages say not able to Copy or Save. I see several other people have posted the same issue over the past several years, but the problems continue to exist. What is the solution. I'm a 40-or so year user of Office products and this is very frustrating. Please help.

    Hi Gary Griggs,

Since the common save-location troubleshooting has already been suggested, it may be worth checking whether PowerPoint can save while running with add-ins temporarily disabled:

    1. Press Windows + R.
    2. Type powerpnt /safe and press Enter.
    3. Create a new blank presentation and try saving it locally.

If saving works in Safe Mode, an Office add-in may be interfering with the save process. You can then disable add-ins from File > Options > Add-ins and test again one at a time.

If the issue persists, please let me know:

    • Whether the error occurs with every new presentation or only specific files.
    • The exact wording of the Copy/Save error message.
    • Whether you're using the desktop app or PowerPoint through a Microsoft 365 subscription.

Those details can help narrow down the cause and identify the most appropriate next steps. Feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

    Try this in order:

    1. Save the file locally first.
      • In PowerPoint, select File > Save As.
      • Select This PC.
      • Select Browse, choose a simple local folder such as Documents, give the file a new name, and select Save.
      • If the file saves there, the issue is likely related to the original save location.
    2. If saving to OneDrive was intended, save manually instead of relying on AutoSave.
      • Select File > Save As.
      • Select OneDrive.
      • Choose the folder and save the presentation.
    3. If the presentation still will not save, create a new presentation and move the slides into it.
      • Open a new blank presentation.
      • Import or reuse the slides from the problem file.
      • Save the new file locally.
      • This helps if the original presentation is corrupted.
    4. Make sure Office is updated.
      • In PowerPoint, go to File > Account > Update Options > Update Now.
    5. If the error mentions the file is in use or loaded by another user, test whether the Windows user profile is the cause.
      • Create a new Windows user account.
      • Sign in to that account and try saving a new PowerPoint presentation there.
      • If saving works in the new account, the problem is likely related to the original user profile.
    6. If saving to a cloud-synced or external location, try a standard local folder instead.
      • Save to Desktop or Documents first.
      • Then move the file afterward if needed.

A practical end-to-end path is: save to Documents with File > Save As > This PC > Browse, then if that fails, create a new blank presentation and save that one locally, then update Office and test from a new Windows user account.
