Using Classic Outlook on Windows for personal email, calendar, and contact management
Try these checks in classic Outlook on the desktop:
- Look at the Outlook status bar at the bottom.
- If it shows Working Offline or Disconnected, Outlook is not connected to the mail server.
- If it shows Working Offline, reconnect it.
- In classic Outlook, go to Send/Receive.
- Select Work Offline.
- If the button background is shaded, Outlook is offline. If the background is clear, it is connected.
- If it shows Disconnected, test whether the mailbox works in a web or app experience.
- Since the BT app on the iPad still works, the mailbox itself is likely still accessible.
- That points more to a desktop Outlook connection or profile issue.
- Repair the Outlook profile.
- Use Outlook’s profile repair steps to let Outlook diagnose and fix mail profile errors that can cause connection problems.
- If Outlook still will not reconnect, make Outlook the default mail app again in Windows.
- Open Start and search for Default apps.
- In Windows 10: go to Email and choose Outlook.
- In Windows 11: go to Set defaults for applications, select Outlook, then set Outlook as default for the mail-related file and link types.
- If the account is a Microsoft 365 or Exchange account and the Work Offline button is missing, Cached Exchange Mode may be turned off.
- In that case, turn on Cached Exchange Mode or contact the Exchange administrator.
If this started after travel, unusual sign-in activity can trigger extra account verification for Microsoft accounts when signing in from a new location or device. Microsoft recommends making sure security contact info is up to date and using Microsoft Authenticator when traveling.
