How to reactivate my desktop email functions

My outlook on desktop worked fine until I went travelling just over 2 weeks ago. I used an IPAD to access my emails using BT app and that still works but I wish to get back to using my desktop as the default for my emails using Outlook.

Any ideas please

    Hi Peter Goldson,

Thank you for the update. Since your email account is still working on your iPad, the mailbox itself appears to be accessible, which suggests the issue may be limited to the Outlook desktop setup.

As a quick next step, please try creating a new Outlook profile:

    1. Close Outlook.
    2. Open Control Panel > Mail > Show Profiles.
    3. Select Add, create a new profile, and set it as the default.
    4. Add your email account and test Outlook again.

If Outlook still does not connect, please let me know:

    • Which version of Outlook you are using (Classic Outlook or New Outlook).
    • Any error messages displayed when opening Outlook or sending/receiving email.

Feel free to ask me by clicking "Add Comment" or "Add Answer" if you cannot add comment so your response will be visible. Thanks for your effort.

Try these checks in classic Outlook on the desktop:

    1. Look at the Outlook status bar at the bottom.
      • If it shows Working Offline or Disconnected, Outlook is not connected to the mail server.
    2. If it shows Working Offline, reconnect it.
      • In classic Outlook, go to Send/Receive.
      • Select Work Offline.
      • If the button background is shaded, Outlook is offline. If the background is clear, it is connected.
    3. If it shows Disconnected, test whether the mailbox works in a web or app experience.
      • Since the BT app on the iPad still works, the mailbox itself is likely still accessible.
      • That points more to a desktop Outlook connection or profile issue.
    4. Repair the Outlook profile.
      • Use Outlook’s profile repair steps to let Outlook diagnose and fix mail profile errors that can cause connection problems.
    5. If Outlook still will not reconnect, make Outlook the default mail app again in Windows.
      • Open Start and search for Default apps.
      • In Windows 10: go to Email and choose Outlook.
      • In Windows 11: go to Set defaults for applications, select Outlook, then set Outlook as default for the mail-related file and link types.
    6. If the account is a Microsoft 365 or Exchange account and the Work Offline button is missing, Cached Exchange Mode may be turned off.
      • In that case, turn on Cached Exchange Mode or contact the Exchange administrator.

If this started after travel, unusual sign-in activity can trigger extra account verification for Microsoft accounts when signing in from a new location or device. Microsoft recommends making sure security contact info is up to date and using Microsoft Authenticator when traveling.
