We are trying to install a Power BI On premises Data Gateway in a newly created Windows VM, We are not able to change/select the Azure region where the Gateway is supposed to install.

By Default it is installing in WEST US but we need it to be installed under EAST US, Can someone please help us on how/where to configure the Azure Region while installing On Premises Data Gateway?

    Hi @Pavan Kumar Talluri

    Welcome to Microsoft Q&A.

    This is expected behaviour.

The Power BI On‑premises Data Gateway does not allow you to choose or configure an Azure region during installation. The gateway itself is always installed locally on your Windows VM (or server), and its configuration is tied to your Power BI tenant region.

That’s why you see “West US” by default: your tenant is provisioned in West US, and gateway resources automatically align with that tenant region. Changing the VM’s location or Azure region does not affect the gateway’s region.

Please take note of the below points:

    • The gateway region is determined by your Power BI tenant region, not by the VM or Azure resource group location.

    • You cannot override or manually select a different region during gateway setup.

    • If you require the gateway to be associated with East US, your Power BI tenant itself must be provisioned in East US. This can only be set at the time of tenant creation.

Next steps if East US is required:

    • Confirm your organization’s Power BI tenant region in the Power BI Admin Portal.

    • If data residency in East US is mandatory, you would need to work with Microsoft support or your account team to explore tenant migration options (note: migrations are limited and subject to approval).

    • Otherwise, the gateway will continue to operate correctly, but always in the tenant’s region (West US in your case).
