How to remove "read only" from document when all other efforts fail? No, the "read-only" box is not checked, yet even when editing the Word doc it will lock-up, prevent me from further editing and list itself as "read only". I am the creator of the document and the only one with any access to it. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Hi ICOH,

    Thank you for reaching out.

Since the document becomes read-only while you are actively editing, this may indicate document corruption, an interfering Word add-in, or a problem with the Microsoft 365 installation.

To resolve the issue, please try the following steps in order:

    1. Check Word’s editing restrictions

Open the document and check the following:

    • Select File > Info > Protect Document.
    • If Always Open Read-Only is highlighted, select it to turn the setting off.

    User's image

    • Go to Review > Protect > Restrict Editing.
    • If protection is active, select Stop Protection.

    User's image

    • If the upper-right corner of Word displays Viewing or Reviewing, change it to Editing.
    1. Repair the document
    • Open Microsoft Word without opening the affected document.
    • Go to File > Open > Browse.
    • Select the affected document once.
    • Select the arrow next to Open, then choose Open and Repair.

    User's image

    • After the document opens, save it with a new name and test whether the issue continues.
    1. Test Word in Safe Mode
    • Close all open Word windows.
    • Press Windows key + R.
    • Enter winword /safe, then select OK.

    User's image

    • Open the affected document and try editing it.

If the document works normally in Safe Mode, an add-in may be causing the issue.

    • Go to File > Options > Add-ins, select COM Add-ins next to Manage, and select Go.

    User's image

    • Disable the add-ins temporarily, restart Word normally, and test the document again.
    1. Repair Office
    • Close all Office applications (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook, etc.).
    • Open Windows Settings (press Windows + I).
    • Go to Apps > Installed apps.

    User's image

    • Find Microsoft 365 / Microsoft Office in the list.
    • Select the three dots (…) next to it and choose Modify.

    User's image

    • If prompted by User Account Control, select Yes.
    • Choose Online Repair > then select Repair.

    User's image

    • Follow the on‑screen instructions until it completes.

I hope your issue gets resolved soon. Any updates would be greatly appreciated.

    Try these in order:

    1. In Word, switch the document mode to Editing.
      • In the upper-right corner, if the mode shows Viewing or Reviewing, change it to Editing.
      • If Editing is not available, the file may have document restrictions or permission limits.
    2. Clear any file-level read-only setting.
      • Close Word.
      • In File Explorer, right-click the document > Properties.
      • If Read-only is checked, clear it and select OK.
      • If there is an Unblock option in Properties, select it.
    3. Check whether the document is set to always open read-only.
      • Open the file in Word.
      • Go to File > Info.
      • Select Protect document.
      • If Always Open Read-Only is enabled, select it to clear it.
    4. Check whether the file was marked as final.
      • In Word, go to File > Info > Protect Document.
      • If Mark as Final is enabled, select it again to turn it off.
    5. Check for Protected View behavior.
      • Files downloaded from the internet, email attachments, or files copied from another PC can open in Protected View or viewing-only mode.
      • If that is the cause, use the file’s Properties dialog and select Unblock if that option appears.
    6. If Word says the document is locked by another user, remove the owner file.
      • Close all Word windows.
      • Open Task Manager and end any remaining Winword.exe processes.
      • In File Explorer, open the folder that contains the document.
      • Delete the temporary owner file that starts with ~$ and matches the document name.
      • Reopen the document.
      • Warning: only do this after confirming the document is not actually open elsewhere.
    7. If the problem continues, try the basic repair steps.
      • Restart the computer.
      • Check that Office updates are installed.
      • Perform an Online Repair of Office.
    8. If the document has editing restrictions, remove or change them only if permitted.
      • Some restrictions are controlled by the document owner or organization and cannot be changed locally.
      • A document can also be protected so that only selected parts are editable.

If the file becomes read-only while editing, the most relevant causes from the documented fixes are:

    • Word is switching the file into Viewing instead of Editing
    • the file has a hidden read-only or blocked attribute
    • the document is Always Open Read-Only or Mark as Final
    • Word is detecting a stale lock file (~$...) and treating the document as in use
